Actor Janhvi Kapoor said that she has only recently started to stand up for herself, and not ‘invalidate’ her feelings, after years of not having enough courage to speak out about subjects that she feels strongly about. In an interview with Film Companion, Janhvi said that she didn’t say anything when morphed pictures of her were circulated online when she was just a teenager, because she feared that people would think she was craving attention.

But, she said, she can now say without a shred of indecision that this was wrong. She also praised actor Rashmika Mandanna, who condemned a viral deepfake of herself on social media. “It’s strange to say this, given that anything and everything I say, given the context of where I come from sounds like… So, I’m a little conscious. But I’ve been a little apologetic about where I come from, because there are bigger and tougher things that people have to deal with,” she said.

Janhvi continued, “Everything that I’ve dealt with in life, I’ve looked at as, ‘It doesn’t really matter. Look at what people actually go through’. And, I think I invalidated a lot of my feelings, and that resulted in me not really having a voice to express what I want, what I don’t want. Because I didn’t want to seem imposing. I didn’t even know that I had the right to speak about deepfakes or altered images. I didn’t know I could say anything. I applaud Rashmika for standing up.”

Janhvi said that she remembers seeing morphed images of herself when she was just 15, and thinking that this is a part of the deal of being a public figure. “I thought I can’t complain, because it’ll seem like I want attention,” she said. Janhvi said that she has learned to embrace her origins, and to accept the fact that she’s here because she had it easier than most. But it is her responsibility towards her late mother Sridevi to make the best of the opportunity that she’s been given. Janhvi is currently filming her debut Telugu movie, Devara, and will soon be seen in the sports drama Mr and Mrs Mahi.
