Jaat box office collection day 19: Sunny Deol’s film records lowest single-day collection, has made less than a fifth of Gadar 2

Jaat box office collection day 19: While Sunny Deol's action film has crossed Rs 100 crore globally, it struggles to achieve the same feat domestically amid competition from Akshay Kumar's Kesari 2.

Sunny Deol’s latest action film, Gopichand Malineni’s Jaat, is not a patch on his last blockbuster, Anil Sharma’s Gadar 2. As Jaat competes with a more recent release, Akshay Kumar’s period courtroom drama Kesari 2: The Untold Story of Jallianwala Bagh, its numbers saw a dip on its third Monday at the domestic box office.

Jaat added merely Rs 0.65 crore to its collection on Monday, its 19th day at the box office. This was the film’s lowest single-day collection since its release earlier this month. Prior to this Monday, its lowest single-day collection in its 19-day run was on the previous Friday, on day 16, at Rs 0.85 crore. It was the same day that Kesari 2 opened at the box office.

As per industry tracker Sacnilk, Jaat saw a minor spike during its third weekend. It earned Rs 1.4 crore on day 17, Saturday, and Rs 2 crore on day 18, Sunday respectively. But the daily collection dipped to lakhs once again on Monday. The total domestic box office collection of Jaat now stands at Rs 85.65 crore.

However, given its pace after the release of Kesari 2, Jaat may not be able to make it to the coveted Rs 100 crore club. It’s a significant step down from Sunny’s last film, Gadar 2, which earned more than five times of Jaat and finished at Rs 513.75 crore at the Indian box office. After Kesari 2, Jaat will soon face fresh competition from Rajkumar Gupta’s thriller Raid 2, starring Ajay Devgn, which releases in cinemas this Thursday on May 1.

However, Jaat did cross the Rs 100 crore mark globally, the makers announced on April 21, within 11 days of release. Mythri Movie Makers, the production house behind box office juggernauts like Pushpa, had shared the box office update on its X handle. “The celebration of mass commercial cinema. A feast for the Single Screens continues. #JAAT collects 102.13 CRORES GROSS WORLDWIDE,” read the caption.

The makers seem pleased with the box office response as they have confirmed the sequel to the film with a social media post days after the first part’s release. Sunny, who made a roaring return at the box office with a sequel to his 2001 blockbuster cross-border romance Gadar, is already doing another sequel in Border 2, a follow-up to JP Dutta’s 1997 hit epic war film Border.

Jaat also stars Randeep Hooda, Vineet Kumar Singh, Saiyami Kher, and Regina Cassandra. It revolves around Sunny’s titular character rescuing and avenging the abduction of Saiyami’s cop by Sri Lankan gangster Rana Tunga (played by Hooda).
