Kabir Khan’s New York starred Katrina Kaif, John Abraham, Irrfan Khan and Neil Nitin Mukesh in lead roles but it was a cameo by Nawazuddin Siddiqui that stole the show. Nawaz, who was still trying to get established in the Hindi film industry at that point, had an impactful scene in the film that left Irrfan Khan in tears. Director Kabir Khan, in a recent interview, recalled that day and said that he only shot one take and just that take moved everyone who was present in the room.

In a chat with Humans of Cinema, Kabir recalled that after New York, many people thought that Nawaz wasn’t an actor, but a real-life case study as many people came up to him and asked how he got in touch with the man. Kabir recalled that Nawazuddin’s audition was so impressive that he was certain about his casting. “Ali Abbas Zafar (director) was my assistant on New York. He showed me Nawazuddin’s audition. I said do anything but we have to get this guy,” he recalled.

Kabir recalled the shoot day and shared that the scene we saw in the film was one take. “It’s a non-stop 3-4 minute take and I never did another take because when I said cut, some of the people in the crew were crying and some of them were clapping. I remember Irrfan walking in half an hour later and he said everyone’s talking about Nawaz’s performance,” he recalled.

The actor played Zilgai in New York, a man who was arrested after 9/11 on suspicion and tortured while in custody. He is eventually let go but is left scarred by the events.

Kabir then took Irrfan to the monitor and showed him the take, which left Irrfan in tears. “I took Irrfan to the monitor and I played it and as he was watching it, tears were streaming down Irrfan’s face. He went and hugged Nawaz,” he shared.

In New York, Nawazuddin Siddiqui played Zilgai, who gets arrested by the authorities after 9/11 and is placed in custody. While in custody, he is tortured but is eventually released. Irrfan Khan played an FBI agent in the film.
