While planning his return to Bandra after living in Lokhandwala for a brief period, actor Jaaved Jaaferi was certain that he needed one thing in his new forever home: ample space to breathe freely. For the “Bandra boy,” who spent most of his formative years in this area, his only gripe with the coastal suburb was its cramped nature, with buildings packed closely together. But when he came across a 7,000-square-foot sea-facing apartment, Jaaferi immediately knew this was the one. He joined forces with an interior design firm to turn this space into a dream home that he described as, “Warm, natural, eclectic.”
Recently, the actor-comedian gave Architectural Digest a tour of his home, inspired by Mediterranean design. “This place is a combination of three varying sensibilities,” Jaaved told AD as the doors to his apartment, splashed with shades of the earth, opened. As the actor sat down on his plush sage green couch in his living room alongside his children, Alaviaa and Meezaan, he appeared serene, reflecting the home’s aesthetic.
“One thing we’ve all agreed on is the textured walls that run throughout the house,” Meezaan said, to which Jaaved added, “The first thing all of them stressed when we moved here was that we need a dining table.” In one corner of the house, a dining table with a sleek onyx slab supported by two large wooden logs sits accompanied by paper lamps on the ceiling and comfy white-cushioned upholstered chairs, waiting for the family to gather and enjoy a sumptuous meal. Though the intention was for the family to come together at mealtimes, they joked that they sometimes sit there with their phones, and the children were quick to point out that Jaaved is no exception.
As Alaviaa and Meezaan showed their rooms, it becomes clear that they made sure their spaces reflected their personalities. Meezaan’s room features a collection of music CDs and a spacious closet, while Alaviaa’s room is bathed in natural light and decorated with sombre, earthy tones. In one corner of her room is a rust-maroon chair, and directly opposite her bed on the wall hangs a large TV with a PlayStation connected, where she enjoys playing Fortnite.
The apartment also includes a long terrace where the family often meets to chat and share jokes. “A house is just four walls; a home also includes people, love, sharing, and caring,” Jaaved, who rose to fame by hosting the dance competition television series Boogie Woogie, emphasised, highlighting the energy the space exudes.
