‘I wanted to watch Dhoom, dad showed me Tarkovsky’: Babil says Irrfan Khan never taught him acting
Babil Khan said that Irrfan Khan didn't leave him with tips about acting, but taught him a great deal about how to live life.

Actor Babil Khan, who was recently seen in Netflix’s Friday Night Plan, has opened up about what it was like growing up with his father, late actor Irrfan Khan. Babil mentioned that although Irrfan didn’t teach him acting, he imparted valuable lessons about living life. He also shared how Irrfan encouraged him to watch classic films, even when he was more inclined to watch movies like Dhoom.
In an interview with Radio Nasha, Babil said, “My dad and mom both were artists, so I had a very cinema-heavy upbringing. Bergman, Tarkovsky would be playing at home. But I wanted to watch Dhoom and dad would show me Tarkovsky. I grew up in conflict.” When the host said, “What a rich experience it must have been,” Babil replied, “I did not want the rich experience. But baba would be like, ‘existence’.”
When asked to highlight a quality of Irrfan that he has imbibed, Babil said, “Quality as an actor I haven’t kept, Quality as a human being I have kept. When you keep qualities as a human being, it reflects in your acting. You know, it’s not about acting; acting is not actually what acting is. It’s about living and being able to reflect that onto your art through the craft of acting, which you have to learn.”
Babil, who made his debut with the film Qala, said that they never discussed acting at home. He continued, “He never gave me the advice to go in front of the camera. He never gave me acting tips, we never discussed acting at our home. He taught me a lot about living life, which now, I’m learning acting on my own. If you had not taught me this about life, I would have not learnt this about acting. He was teaching me about acting through life.”
Irrfan was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer in March 2018 and passed away in 2020.
