Hrithik Roshan didn’t get any feedback on what his character Rohit from his iconic film, Koi Mil Gaya, should be like. In the era when method acting was less common, Hrithik locked himself in a hotel room for five days before the film’s shooting began to get into the character of Rohit. However, in a recent interview, the actor revealed that many people he admired made fun of his process.

In a recent conversation with Film Companion, Hrithik said, “People made me feel so embarrassed about my method. I am so glad, we are more open to actors having a process now. I had no other way, I knew the feeling and to reach there, I knew I had to go through this process. I had to be secluded, I couldn’t lock up that feeling if I was surrounded by people who know me as Hrithik. So, I locked myself up in a hotel room for five days just before the shoot began, just constructing the character. I really enjoyed that process and on the set, I stayed on as Rohit, and I was surrounded by amazing actors like Rekha ji and Preity who didn’t judge that.

He added, “However, I was quite embarrassed because a lot of people I admired and respected made fun of the fact that I was crazy about the method. They would say things like, ‘Pagal ho gaya hai,’ ‘Kya zaroorat hai, it’s acting, just go and say your lines (He has gone mad, what is the need to do this).’ But you know I am not that good an actor, I need to do my process.”

In the film, Hrithik played the character of Rohit, a developmentally disabled man. During the interview, the actor explained how he took inspiration from his personal hardships to play the role. He said, “I have experienced bullying and a stutter, which was a handicap and made fun of. So, I understood the character, I had the emotional intelligence about the role so I could apply that. I knew I had the heart of Rohit so half the battle was won. I think Rohit was just there in me. The traumatised part of me remained a child and remained vulnerable.”

Koi Mil Gaya turned 20 today. The film was directed by Hrithik Roshan’s father and filmmaker Rakesh Roshan. It also starred Preity Zinta and Rekha in lead roles.
