Hrithik Roshan had ‘a big fight’ with sister Sunaina after she ‘yelled at him’ for wanting to quit alcoholism rehab
Hrithik Roshan's sister Sunaina Roshan went to rehab to recover from alcohol addiction. She reveals her brother had a huge part to play in her not giving up prematurely.

Hrithik Roshan’s sister, Sunaina Roshan, has often spoken about her struggle with alcohol addiction. She went to rehab overseas even while her father, veteran filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, was diagnosed with cancer. Her brother had a major role to play in her recovery as he insisted she doesn’t quit rehab prematurely. “It was a very, very tough course. It was a 28-day course, and I probably wanted to come back on the 10th day. My dad said to come back. But my brother told me, ‘You’re not coming back.’ He never allowed me to come back. He said she has to finish it, only then she’ll not turn to alcohol,” recalled Sunaina in an interview with Galatta India
She said that Hrithik was determined that she complete her course. “I didn’t know until I came back from the rehab that my father had cancer. While we were at the rehab, there weren’t any phones allowed. It was said to us to not do any tedious mental exercise or working, you just have to take it easy for the next two-three months.”
Once Sunaina’s mother Pinkie Roshan fetched her from the rehab, Rakesh Roshan broke the news to her. “I was shaken up. Even talking about it is like living the moment I got to know,” said Sunaina, adding, “I wanted to come back home from rehab. I fired my brother that day. I kept telling him I wanted to come back, and said, ‘You guys don’t care for me.’ But he said no. I got so frustrated I kept yelling at him.”
Sunaina recalled the point she realised she needed to go to rehab. “I started drinking slowly. For me, a can of beer became probably six cans of beer at a time. There were days I’d drink from morning to evening. One day, I realized I don’t remember what I did the previous evening. So that was very scary. Imagine going to somebody’s house and not remember what you’ve spoken. I’d be banged out the next morning,” she said.
“That’s the only side of me that I hated to the T. This wasn’t me — a strong woman succumbing to such a thing just to numb her brain,” confessed Sunaina. She recalled how she told her parents she didn’t want a rehab in India because here, you can pay a small amount of money to anyone and they’d get you alcohol. She was insistent that she took a rehab overseas for better recovery.
