Having lived in New Zealand and UK, Shilpa Shirodkar vows never to leave India now: ‘Loneliness was eating me’
Shilpa Shirodkar opened up about resurrecting her career in acting, sharing that she bought a one-way ticket to Mumbai with no work in the pipeline.

Actor Shilpa Shirodkar, who had a dream debut in Bhrashtachar opposite Mithun Chakraborty and went on to star in several hit films like Hum, Khuda Gawah, Aankhen, among others, recently spoke about leaving everything at the peak of her career and moving abroad with her husband. In an interaction with Delnaaz Irani, Shilpa admitted that she has now permanently moved back to Mumbai, as she often felt lonely living abroad.
She said, “It wasn’t about London. I am a people’s person and the career that I chose, I used to meet so many people and I was used to being busy. So, for me, it was very lonely and in 25 years that I have been married, we never stayed in one country. We travelled so much that it was difficult for me to say that this country is my home. It was the loneliness that was eating me.”
She added, “My husband travels a lot because of his work and my daughter is 21 and she has gone off to University and I’m left alone at the house. I did it when I was young, but I can’t do it now I needed to be around people I love.”
Shilpa further opened up about resurrecting her career in acting, sharing that she bought a one-way ticket to Mumbai with no work in the pipeline. However, her initial conversations with casting agents weren’t very promising. She said, “I was calling casting agents asking for work, and they were kind enough to pick up and respond, but nothing was happening. They knew I was looking for work, but I was just no one at that time.”
She explained that her initial calls with casting agents did not go well. She revealed that she was once approached for a role in the second season of a popular web show, but her character had erotic scenes. When she refused to do them, the casting agent excused herself and said they had another role for her.
However, when Shilpa asked about her visibility in that role, the agent refused to disclose any details and instead asked her to come for an audition, saying that only if the production house liked her performance, she would get a call back. Shilpa contested this, pointing out that she has earned enough credibility in the industry to at least know the visibility of her role in the project.
“I told her that I do understand that I have start from scratch but I have earned a position where you can atleast tell me if the visibility is there, if I get visibility, I am happy to do auditions, if not there is no use. But she was so adamant, she said, ‘It doesn’t work like that anymore’,” she said.
On the work front, Shilpa will next be seen in Telugu film Jatadhara.
