Hansal Mehta applauds Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki: ‘Nice to end the year with Shah Rukh Khan tugging at your heartstrings’
Renowned filmmaker Hansal Mehta has added his voice to those impressed by Rajkumar Hirani's Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Dunki and recently shared a heartfelt tweet praising the comedy drama.

Though Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki has been unable to create new records at the box office following the release of Prashant Neel’s Prabhas-starrer Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire, the Shah Rukh Khan film seems to be gradually gaining traction with the audience. On Sunday, the film recorded a jump of around 20 per cent in the domestic market, raking in Rs 30.7 crore nett.
Meanwhile, renowned filmmaker Hansal Mehta has added his voice to those impressed by Dunki and recently shared a heartfelt tweet praising the comedy drama.
Mentioning that he thoroughly enjoyed Dunki, Mehta posted on X (formerly Twitter) that although the movie isn’t perfect, it doesn’t matter. “It’s perfectly fine. It gave me what I miss at the movies. It was nostalgic, heartfelt, simple and an ode to what our films once used to be. Not a film I want to overanalyse or overthink. Give me a Rajkumar Hirani film any day.”
“Nice to end the year with Shah Rukh Khan tugging at your heartstrings, looking into her eyes with love and playing a softie. Lovely ensemble and an enduring charm pervades the film which is not a drama, not a comedy, not a tragedy and not a thriller. It is a Rajkumar Hirani film all the way. Go watch it and decide for yourself,” he added.
According to the industry tracker Sacnilk, the SRK film is also performing well at the box office on Monday, having earned approximately Rs 15.85 crore by 6 pm on Christmas day, bringing its domestic nett to Rs 121.48 crore. Meanwhile, production house Red Chillies Entertainment confirmed via social media that Dunki has surpassed the Rs 200 crore mark globally, with its current gross worldwide collection standing at Rs 211.13 crore.
Also starring Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal, Boman Irani and Vikram Kochhar in key roles, the film revolves around the illegal immigration technique of donkey flight.
In her review of the movie, The Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta gave Dunki 1.5 out of 5 stars and noted, “In the 161-minute run-time of the Rajkumar Hirani film, I was hard put to find anything that made me feel. Even Shah Rukh Khan’s Hardy comes off as working too hard for not enough pay-off.”
