Govinda’s wife Sunita Ahuja converted to Christianity only because she wanted to have wine as a child: ‘Parents didn’t know’

Sunita Ahuja, the wife of actor Govinda, opened up about her religious and cultural background in a new interview. She said that she grew up half-Punjabi and half-Nepali, and that she got baptised when she started going to school. But this happened secretly, because she’d heard that people would be given wine during mass, and wanted a taste of alcohol. She also said that she observes several fasts, and visits various places of worship.

Appearing on the Time Out with Ankit YouTube channel, she said, “I was born in Bandra. I’ve been baptised. I was in a Christian school, and all my friends were Christians. As a child, I had heard that Jesus’ blood is wine. And I thought to myself, ‘Wine means alcohol’. I was always very cunning. There’s no harm in having a drink, is there? Just to have some wine, I got myself baptised. I follow Christianity, I go to church every Saturday.”

Sunita said that she also goes to dargahs, gurudwaras, and temples. Asked if her parents were upset with her, she said that they never came to know. Sunita said that she also observes various fasts through the week, and abstains from eating meat on those days. In the same interview, she opened up about the cultural differences between her and Govinda, and said, “I went from wearing miniskirts to sarees. That’s why my husband used to hate me. I would tell him, ‘I’m from Bandra, you’re from Virar, boss’. And he’d say, ‘No, my mother won’t like it’.”

Sunita and Govinda tied the knot in the late 80s, after dating for three years. They have two children, daughter Tina and son Yashvardhan. While Tina has tried her hand at acting, Yashvardhan is gearing up to make his debut.
