Govinda showed no interest in Gadar, said ‘Ismein Hindu-Muslim hain’
Anil Sharma dispelled rumours of Govinda being the original choice for Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. He made it clear that Sunny Deol was his first and only choice for the original film.

Anil Sharma has struck gold at the box office with the release of Gadar 2. This much anticipated sequel to the 2001 blockbuster sees the return of Sunny Deol, reprising his iconic role as Tara Singh. As the fervour around Gadar grew with the sequel’s release, rumours began circulating that Govinda was initially considered for the lead in the original film, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. However, in a recent interview, Anil Sharma, the director behind both the original and its sequel, dispelled these rumours and made it clear that Sunny Deol was his first and only choice for the film.
In a conversation with Bollywood Hungama, when Anil was asked if Govinda was his first choice for Gadar 2, he said, “Govinda wasn’t a choice for Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. I had done a film called Maharaja with him. One day, I was just narrating the story of Gadar to him and he told me, ‘I can’t do this film.’ He thought that I was narrating the film to him because I wanted to cast him.”
Upon hearing the script for the film, Anil revealed that Govinda showed no interest in Gadar due to its portrayal of Hindu-Muslim conflict. He said, “Before narrating the story, I had told him that I have narrated this story to Sunny Deol and I am doing this film with him. Then he asked me, ‘What is the story?’ So then I narrated Gadar’s story to him and he told me, ‘Nahi nahi mein ye picture toh kar bhi nahi sakta kyuki ismein itana Hindu-Musalman hain (No, I can’t do this film because it has so much Hindi-Muslim conflict).’ Bus itane se baat hue aur kuch nahi hua. Par shayad ye galat phahamee unke man mein reh gae ki mein Gadar unko offer kar raha tha (That was the small conversation we had about Gadar. But perhaps this misconception remained in his mind that I was offering him the film). But he wasn’t a bad choice, he was the superstar of that time but in my mind I wanted a Punjabi hero and that could only be Sunny Deol.”
In Gadar 2, Tara Singh ventures across the Pakistan border during the 1971 conflict in a daring attempt to rescue his imprisoned son, portrayed by Utkarsh Sharma. The movie also features Ameesha Patel, Simratt Kaur, and Manish Wadhwa in crucial roles. Gadar 2 is having a good box office run. The film raked in a staggering Rs 460.55 crore within just 18 days of its release.
