Film on Muzaffarnagar riots: Sangeet Som warns of stir, Shorgul producers push release to July 1
The BJP MLA from Sardhana in Meerut said his supporters are opposing the film’s release because its contents could disturb social harmony and create communal tension.

CONTROVERSIAL BJP leader Sangeet Som Thursday demanded a ban on the screening of the Muzaffarnagar riot-themed film Shorgul in Uttar Pradesh. The BJP MLA from Sardhana in Meerut said his supporters are opposing the film’s release because its contents could disturb social harmony and create communal tension.
While the film was initially scheduled to be released this Friday, it was postponed to July 1 on Thursday. “We have been forced to postpone the release of our film to July 1. There is a sense of apprehension in the exhibition sector pertaining to the showcasing of the film and a lot of cinema managers have expressed their reservation. Despite our repeated reassurances, there are certain theatre chains who have maintained their stand of not showcasing the film,” said Swatantra Vijay Singh, the film’s producer.
Som, who was booked in connection with the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, said the depiction of his character in the film was wrong. “I have seen the film’s trailer. The content is wrong. The filmmaker has made it without consulting me and without understanding the situation. My character has been depicted in a poor light. I have never consumed liquor in my life, but in the film, my character drinks,” said Som.

“The UP government has not banned the film because it wants communal tension in the state. We will stage protests outside cinema halls in Meerut and Muzaffarnagar if the film is released on Friday,” Som added.
Shorgul, directed by Pranav Kumar Singh and Jitendra Tiwari, explores the friendship between a Hindu boy and a Muslim amid unrest in Uttar Pradesh. Jimmy Shergil and Ashutosh Rana star in the film.
