Emraan Hashmi opens up on Kangana Ranaut’s complaints about nepotism, says repeating the same thing sounds like an ‘excuse’

Emraan Hashmi feels it is important for outsiders to take inspiration from stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra, who made it in Bollywood on their own.

Actor Emraan Hashmi said that his old co-star Kangana Ranaut’s complaints about nepotism can be valid for her, but if she keeps blaming others for not getting work, it can start sounding like an excuse. The actor asserted that he never got a big launch, despite being Mahesh Bhatt’s nephew, and it is important for outsiders to take inspiration from superstars like Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra, who made it big in Bollywood despite not having any connections in the industry.

In an interview with Janice Sequeira, Emraan opened up about the importance of being “crazily optimistic”. Kangana sparked the debate around nepotism when she appeared on Karan Johar’s show Koffee With Karan in 2016, calling the filmmaker “the flag bearer of nepotism”.

Sharing his opinion on Kangana’s comments, Emraan said, “It’s good to protest about something if you are an outsider, but if you keep saying that again and again it becomes a crutch. That becomes like a – I wouldn’t want to use such a harsh word – but an excuse, when you should be pushing ahead. There are people who have made it from the outside and that should give you hope. This shouldn’t be a deterrent that ‘I won’t get it because he is getting it’. Then that’s on the back foot and demotivating yourself. Motivate yourself by saying that SRK did it, or Priyanka did it, so I will do it. Be crazily optimistic in that sense.”

Emraan, who was recently seen in Tiger 3 as the villain, said that when Kangana made her Bollywood debut with 2006 film Gangster, he was already a popular actor, but instead, she was given the leading role. “Everyone is talking about it (nepotism)… I have always maintained that Karan got the flak because he was on the show, and she said that, and I feel he has given enough opportunities to outsiders. I love Kangana and she is a fantastic artist and she is great, and I think she also has a viewpoint. It’s coming from her body of experience.”

Emraan added, “I think my experience through this is that her break was in Gangster. There was me, coming after a hit, with the Bhatts. You can also say that I was part of the whole nepo thing, and it was with her in the centrestage, and I became the villain or the guy in negative shades. So, maybe it’s true to a certain extent, it is difficult for outsiders to get an entry point in the industry, but as many success stories there are of people from here, there are more success stories of people from the outside. It definitely is easy for people here, but we come with our own hurdles. I didn’t have a grand launch, my story is different. I wasn’t someone’s son, so I didn’t have a booming entry as a star in the vehicle in the first film, but yes, it’s easy and difficult for nepo kids.”

Emraan will soon be seen in Showtime, which will stream on Disney Plus Hotstar. He also has a cameo in Sara Ali Khan’s Ae Watan Mere Watan. The actor is venturing in Telugu cinema with Pawan Kalyan’s OG and Adivi Sesh’s G2, which is a sequel of 2018 blockbuster Goodachari.
