The second film in the hit Dream Girl franchise, Dream Girl 2 has started its run at the box office on a positive note. After an opening of Rs 10.69 crore, the film has earned Rs 14.02 crore on Saturday, reported industry tracker Sacnilk. This brings the total collection of the Ayushmann Khurrana and Ananya Panday starrer to Rs 24.71 crore.

Ahead of Dream Girl 2’s release, the going looked tough, since previous releases, Gadar 2, OMG 2, and Jailer, were still creating a storm at the ticket counters. But the audience has lapped up the comedy-drama as well. Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote about the film’s good opening figures on X (formerly Twitter), “Now the enthusiastic start of #DreamGirl2 has helped in the REVIVAL of #Bollywood. The continuous flow of successes has brought joy and optimism back… YES, #Bollywood is back with a bang!”

Dream Girl, which was released in 2019, had a similar start at the box office. It started its run with Rs 10.15 crore and ended up earning Rs 142.26 crore. The Raaj Shaandilyaa film had Ayushmann cross-dressed as Pooja for the first time and starred Nushrratt Bharuccha opposite Ayushmann.

Dream Girl 2 is benefitting from positive word of mouth. The film has Ayushmann’s character Karan becoming Pooja to save his father from debt. In the movie, he slips into many roles while being Pooja — bar dancer, a psychiatrist, and a daughter-in-law.

The Indian Express film critic Shubhra Gupta gave the film 2.5 stars and wrote in her review, “Dream Girl 2, touted as the ‘spiritual successor’ of the 2019 film of the same name, repeats most of the original cast in its clearly-stated intention of pushing gender boundaries a couple of notches higher. Which is a good thing, and gives this 2023 outing its edge.”
