Actor Kriti Sanon, who is making her debut as a film producer with the upcoming Netflix thriller Do Patti, said that making this career leap serves two purposes. First, she can create opportunities for herself that she might not normally have been offered, and second, she can satisfy her creative desire to be a part of great projects for women. At Expresso, Kriti also spoke about her illustrious co-star in Do Patti, Kajol, and said that she is immensely proud that the film marks the first time that Kajol has played a cop on screen.
Asked what prompted her to turn producer, Kriti said, “I wanted to tell stories that should be told, and I wanted to be more creatively involved in those stories that I feel passionately for. Yes, it gives you the liberty of creating roles for yourself that wouldn’t necessarily be on the table. After Mimi, I was craving deep roles. There aren’t too many great roles being written (for women). It’s getting better, for sure, but it’s difficult to find a well-written, intense role sometimes.”
Kriti said that she approached writer Kanika Dhillon for a possible collaboration, because she was impressed with Kanika’s past work. She had no idea that a dual role out of it. Kanika is best known for her collaborations with Taapsee Pannu. “It was clear that I wanted to act in the film I was going to produce. I told her that I wanted to work with her because she writes really layered characters, and she ended up giving me two roles, which wasn’t the plan in the beginning. But yes, you can create opportunities when you don’t find them. Even if you don’t produce, you can collaborate with writers and tell them that you want to work…” Kriti said.
Asked if Kajol was her top choice for the other role in the film, Kriti said, “Kanika is the one who actually went to her. For us, what was amazing was that she has never played a cop. We got to know this much later. Kanika approached her, and she was definitely in the top two in our minds. This role needed someone with gravity and power in their eyes. I’m just glad she’s playing a cop for the first time in our film.”
Also starring Shaheer Sheikh, Tanvi Azmi and Brijendra Kala, Do Patti is directed by Shashanka Chaturvedi. The film will be released on Netflix on Friday.
