When Dimple Kapadia admitted she was ‘very scared’ for Rajesh Khanna when he contested elections, said she ‘begged’ people to vote for him
Dimple Kapadia said she was 'scared' for Rajesh Khanna as he decided to enter politics. She recalled that she 'begged' people to vote for him.

Dimple Kapadia and Rajesh Khanna had a rocky marriage and after spending nine years with each other, and welcoming two daughters Twinkle and Rinke, the couple decided to part ways. While they never divorced, their separation made waves as Dimple made her comeback in the movies. As she became a successful actor in the 1980s, Rajesh was going through a tough phase as a lead actor. In the early 1990s, he decided to contest for Lok Sabha elections and at that time, his estranged wife Dimple campaigned for him. When asked about it later, Dimple said that she was “scared” for Rajesh when he decided to enter politics and said that she actually “begged” the people to vote for him.
In a 1994 interview with Pritish Nandy, when Dimple was asked why she campaigned for Rajesh, she said that it was important for her to stand by him in public. “Why did I do it?” she said out loud and as the interviewer asked that it was “rare” for an “estranged wife” to campaign, she said, “What are friends for? I mean if I can’t stand by somebody I’ve known for a good part of my life. For me, it’s important.”
When asked if she expected Rajesh Khanna to win, Dimple Kapadia said that she was “very scared for him” and it was actually a surprise that he won. “I was scared for him. I was really scared for him. And it was a very pleasant surprise that he won. I am very very glad that he won,” she said. Rajesh had contested from New Delhi seat during the 1991 Lok Sabha elections, which he lost at first. After the winning MP resigned, he again contested for the seat in 1992 and won. He left active politics after 1996.
Dimple was asked about the promises that she made during his campaign and how she got people to vote for him. She said, “I didn’t make any promises. I begged them. That’s what I did. At times, I would take my dupatta and go like that (gestures putting her arms out.) I genuinely begged them and asked them for it and they gave it to me.” Calling the experience of campaigning the “greatest experience of my life”, she called it “incredible” because of the love she received.
Dimple Kapadia and Rajesh Khanna got married when she was only 15 and he was twice her age. The couple separated after nine years of marriage and never reconciled again. He was passed away in 2012 at 69.
