Diljit Dosanjh's look was created by 50 craftsmen who worked across four days to create the royal look at the Met Gala.

Diljit Dosanjh had a major moment at the global stage at the recently held Met Gala in New York where he walked the carpet in an exotic outfit that honoured his Punjabi heritage. Diljit’s outfit, inspired by the Maharaja of Patiala, was created by designer Prabal Gurung and a new video by Vogue India, the making of the outfit is showed in great detail.
The video suggests that 50 craftsmen worked over four days to create the cape. The back of Diljit’s cape had the map of Punjab with Gurumukhi (script of Punjabi language) alphabets embroidered through it. The video shared that the alphabets and the map were hand-embroidered with gold threads. About the silk cape, it was shared, “Peacocks and roses were stitched along with French knot detailing on the silk cape.”

One of the stylists of the team, Sohail Mughal, shared a long note where he discussed Diljit’s look. “There was simply no margin for error—we needed to bring nothing less than our absolute best. This collaboration was for India’s supremely talented singer, actor, and global icon, @diljitdosanjh , marking his debut at the Met Gala 2025—a moment of immense pride for us and for Indian heritage,” he wrote and added, “Recognizing the enormity of the responsibility, we quickly brought in @pitambarabymanisha, a close friend and remarkable designer. Initially, we kept the project details under wraps, but when we finally revealed who we were working with, Manisha enthusiastically responded in her characteristic style, “Kar denge ji!”—assuring us with humor and confidence that she’d make it happen. Her profound understanding of Punjabi culture and heritage made her an indispensable part of our team.”

Diljit’s stylist Abhilasha Devnani, in an earlier chat with The New York Times, shared that since the look was based on the Maharaja of Patiala, they wanted to borrow the diamond necklace weighing 1000 carats. The necklace was first commissioned by the Maharaja in 1928 to Cartier. But, Abhilasha was told that the necklace is sealed in a museum so she contacted an Indian jeweler to create jewellery inspired by the Maharaja’s collection.
