Actor Celina Jaitly has been supporting the LGBTQIA community for a long time now. However, her journey as an activist has not been easy. The actor, who has been part of several Bollywood films, revealed that when she associated herself with the cause, it turned into a personal battle for her with no one coming up to support her, even LGBTQIA people from Bollywood.

In an interview with Masala Magazine, Celina opened up about her journey and said, “When I jumped into the LGBTQIA movement, section 377 which criminalized homosexuality was in effect. I was standing up for a taboo human rights issue and also against the law in place for more than 140 years.”

She added, “Consequently, many, including friends and colleagues, turned their back on me. I received threats from people around the country. Even LGBTQIA colleagues from the film industry turned their backs on me because they were worried any association with me would make their identities vulnerable to exposure.”

However, this didn’t stop Celina Jaitly from being a strong voice in the movement.

“I supported LGBTQIA organizations, events and film festivals despite the threats. Due to the dangerous threats I’d to hire extra personal security amounting to lakhs on my expense in order to continue my work,” the actor said.

The actor also revealed that she was abandoned by her friends in the film industry.

“I continued because my mother always told me you can’t throw out an entire bushel because of one rotten apple. From being questioned about my own sexuality to threats from extremists and being dropped from friend circles and films, I’ve experienced it all,” she said.
