‘If someone kills Sunny, I can become a savage’: Bobby Deol reveals what went through his mind while filming key Animal scene
Actor Bobby Deol said that he nailed a key shot in Animal because he tapped into a deeply personal space in his mind to extract the necessary performance.
Bobby Deol in a still from Animal.Actor Bobby Deol, whose extended cameo in the blockbuster film Animal is being appreciated, spoke about not judging his villainous character, and how he nailed a shot in one take by harnessing personal emotions into his performance. In an interview with Film Companion, Bobby said that he simply imagined someone harming his brother, actor Sunny Deol, and the emotions flowed out of him.
The scene that he was referring to is the one in which his character, Abrar, is informed that his brother has been killed. This sends Abrar on a warpath with Ranbir Kapoor’s Ranvijay, the protagonist of the movie. But because the film doesn’t deal in black and white, Bobby said that in their final face-off, it’s impossible to differentiate between the hero and the villain.
Asked how he was able to tap into this ‘tank of evil’, Bobby said, “So much happens in your life, you’ve been hurt, the relationship you share with your family. So, when I was doing this film and I was told this story, I didn’t think I was the villain. I was told that I had a grandfather who committed suicide in front of me, and it was such a big shock that I lost my voice. I swore I’d take revenge.”
Recalling the emotion that he tapped into, Bobby said, “My family means everything to me, and you know my family. The Deols are emotional people. We can do anything for each other. These thoughts help an actor perform. You can’t research, visit places, observe people… I’m 54 now, I’ve seen so much in my life. I’ve felt pain, I’ve felt happiness. When I was performing that scene – and I couldn’t even speak – and I thought, ‘If someone kills my brother, I can become a savage’. And that’s the feeling that came inside me.”
Bobby had spoken about going into this dark space previously, in an interview with iDream Media some days ago. “When I was doing the scene in the film, it was about a brother who has lost his brother… As actors, we use incidents in our lives to bring that emotion. We have a bank full of them. My brother means the world to me. When I was performing that scene, it was as if I’ve actually lost my brother. And that’s why, when I was emoting, it felt real,” he said.
Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga and starring Ranbir Kapoor, Animal has emerged as one of the biggest hits of the year. The film has grossed Rs 835 crore worldwide, making it the third Indian movie of 2023, behind Pathaan and Jawan, to pass the $100 million mark globally.
