Actor Rajat Bedi has made a smashing comeback with Aryan Khan’s directorial debut ‘The Ba***ds Of Bollywood‘ after 15 years. His appearance in the Netflix show as Jaraj Saxena, a man on the periphery of industry who is an object of derison, has received a lot of interest. Now, in an interview with SCREEN, Rajat opened up about his experience of working in the action-comedy drama with Aryan. He also recalled assisting director Ramesh Sippy as a 19-year-old, in his 1995 film Zamaana Deewana, starring superstar Shah Rukh Khan.

Life has come full circle for Rajat Bedi as his son Vivaan Bedi assisted Aryan Khan on Ba***ds of Bollywood, after he assisted on SRK’s film 30 years ago. “I am full of gratitude to be a part of Aryan’s first venture. I have had a journey with his father also in the past. When I was 18 years old, I entered the industry as an assistant director to Ramesh Sippy in Zamaana Deewana. For two and a half years, I was as a child with Shah Rukh sir. My relationship goes way back then,” he said.

The actor further added, “I had no idea this was under works. Aryan called me because he crafted this role for me. He told me, ‘Sir, please will you consider it?’ I told him that you had me at Hello, you don’t even need to narrate it. I put one condition to him that I started my career with your father, I want my son to start his career with you. My son will be launched shortly. He has assisted, been with Aryan for two years on this show.”

Praising Aryan’s filmmaking approach, he expressed, “What a blessing this experience has been! He has really worked hard day and night on this. He has his age group of friends from school, so they would do the next day’s work at night at Aryan’s house using their iPhone and came so prepared on the set the very next day. It was really cute and sweet, I could see that energy and excitement. He loved everything about my character and Jaraj is Aryan’s favourite character in the show.”

“There’s a lot of similarities between Shah Rukh sir and Aryan. Energy is high and both are very sure of what they want to do. I told him so many times that he is so good looking, he should come in front of the camera. But, he was passionate and sure about directing and making. His enthusiasm and excitement are very much like him only,” he shared, highlighting the similarities between the father-son duo.

Rajat had stepped away from the spotlight and moved to Canada for many years after feeling unsatisfied with his career in the Hindi cinema. “I was a little disheartened and I left for Canada. I wasn’t very happy how my career was going in the initial times, after Koi Mil Gaya and a couple of other projects. I wasn’t seeing the growth here which I wanted to. The industry was also different at that time. Koi Mil Gaya was iconic, I am very grateful to Rakesh Roshan and Hrithik that I was a part of that film. It’s just that, it worked for them, did not work for me,” he said.

The 55-year-old continued, “I moved on, started a real estate business in Canada. I also producing collaboration projects in Punjabi, got into the Punjabi cinema. Every time anyone would meet me, they would say that I should return to camera. I was scouting but never got that opportunity to come back.”

Aryan’s offer to feature in The Ba***ds Of Bollywood enticed him to make a return. “Its not like I wasn’t wanting to do something but I just wasn’t getting the right opportunity to work. In our industry, it’s a given that they see your past work and then give you roles. They see if you are successful or not and then cast you. Aryan never got corrupted with that, he was very sure he wanted me for this thing. I am praying that the industry now gives me opportunities to perform.”

When asked about the rumours of him playing Shah Rukh Khan’s body double in his 1998 film Duplicate, Rajat revealed, “It’s the wrong news. Why would I play his duplicate? There’s a huge height difference between him and me, how will I look like his duplicate?”
