Aruna Irani reveals Raj Kapoor granted Rishi Kapoor no extra privileges during Bobby’s shoot: ‘He was a mischievous child’
Aruna Irani also shared a story about how Raj Kapoor called off Bobby's shoot one day solely because she had a headache.

While Raj Kapoor has created many substantial films that have secured a place in the rich tapestry of Indian cinema, Bobby (1973) stands out as one of his most significant successes. What makes the movie’s triumph even more impressive is that it featured newcomers Rishi Kapoor, Raj’s son, and Dimple Kapadia in the lead roles. Despite this, the film emerged as one of the most successful movies of that decade, underscoring that ultimately, the quality of a movie determines its success.
Also starring Prem Nath, Pran, Prem Chopra, Sonia Sahni, Durga Khote, Aruna Irani and Farida Jalal in key roles, Bobby is a musical romance film and its soundtrack, composed by the Laxmikant-Pyarelal duo, became iconic. Recently, actor Aruna Irani shared that Raj Kapoor never afforded Rishi any special treatment, handling him and Dimple equally.

Recalling how she landed the role, Aruna told ETimes that Raj himself reached out to her, inviting her to meet because he had “a good role” for her. Emphasising that no actor would refuse a part in a Raj Kapoor film, she said she agreed to the project as soon as he narrated the story of Bobby. She also remembered Raj stressing that her character, Nima, was not a vamp.
Taking a trip down memory lane, Aruna shared a story about how Raj called off shoot one day solely because she had a headache. They were preparing to film an expensive party scene, in which she wore a green dress and attempted to woo Rishi; but upon learning of her headache, Raj immediately shouted, “Pack up!” Aruna described the “Showman” as deeply compassionate toward his actors and praised his meticulous approach to directing, wherein he went through every minute detail, including how to walk and talk.

“Raj ji treated Chintu baba (Rishi) just like any other new actor. He treated Dimple and Chintu the same way,” she said, explaining that they, like everyone else, would get scolded by him if something went wrong. She added that the filmmaker was also generous with praises when the artistes performed well and never granted Rishi any extra privileges on set despite being his son.
When asked if she thought Rishi Kapoor would go on to become such a big actor, Aruna Irani firmly replied no, stating, “He was a child during Bobby. He was a mischievous child.”
Aruna was most recently seen in director Binoy Gandhi’s romantic comedy Ghudchadi, starring Sanjay Dutt and Raveena Tandon in the lead roles.
