There are films that release, flop, and are forgotten, and then there are films that flop upon its release, but gain a cult following over the years for all the wrong reasons. One such film is Jaani Dushman. The film, released in 2002, has a stellar cast including Sunny Deol, Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Arshad Warsi, Aditya Pancholi, and Manisha Koirala among others. It is also one of the rare films where singer Sonu Nigam has acted. The fantasy-drama was supposed to be the comeback film of actor Armaan Kohli. However, it opened to overwhelmingly negative reviews and was a box office failure. Arshad Warsi, who was also a part of the film, recently shared, “That was one film where my first request was, ‘Sir, sabse pehle ap mujhe maaroge’.”

In a recent interview with Mashable India, the actor recalled shooting for the film and said, “Do not say a word against Jani Dushman. It is a cult movie. I love it. It is the only film, where I have laughed myself to death.” He added, “If you look closely, it’s a smile on my face when I am dying. That was one film where my first request was, ‘Sir, sabse pehle ap mujhe maaroge’ (Sir, you will kill me first). He said, ‘Nahi, yaar, 2 jan ke baad tumhe maarunga. (No, I will kill you after at least two people)’ I was like theek hai sir (I was like okay).”

Arshad Warsi, who is all set to feature in Jolly LLB 3 with Akshay Kumar, recalled an anecdote with the actor in Jani Dushman. He said, “Akshay Kumar is unbelievable. He was willing to do everybody’s role. He said, ‘Jo bhi marega, uske baad mai aajata hu’ (I will come as the reincarnation of whoever dies).”

Arshad laughed as he said, “In the film, the guy could change his form, look, and mission impossible, everything was happening. Whoever died, Akshay came back as them. There were so many funny things that happened in that. It is cult classic. That film is unbelievable.”

Previously, in an interview with Pinkvilla, Akshay Kumar shared, “According to the original script, I was actually dead in the film. So then, an actor couldn’t give his dates. I told the director because I was on per day, should I come? He said, ‘Okay, let’s do a thing. You are in coma. So, I was in coma and then I came back.” The actor who didn’t give his dates is said to be Sunny Deol.

Sonkashi, who was also the part of interview, quickly asked, “Was this movie a hit?” Akshay said, “On satellite, it is a huge hit. Every time a channel is losing its TRP, they put up Jaani Dushman.”

The film had several scenes inspired by The Terminator and The Matrix. It had also created a hype before its release for its innovative special effects, which was uncommon in the industry. However, the film failed to live up to its hype. The film was directed and produced by Rajkumar Kohli, who is known for making Jaani Dushman (1979), Nagin (1976), and Bees Saal Baad (1989) among others.
