Actor Arjun Kapoor, who is currently basking in the success of Singham Again, has opened up about how he struggled to cope with failure and how his family has played a pivotal role in shaping his perspective. The actor, who faced criticism for his 2019 film Panipat, has had a spate of failures in the last few years. He reveals that the first few months of the COVID-19 pandemic were particularly challenging for him.

“I think, what pulled the plug for me eventually was the first few months of Covid. That was the time I was really low because at that time Panipat had not panned out and I think what happens is when a film doesn’t do well you have to take full blame for it. I made the choice to do that film, Ashu sir (Ashutosh Gowarikar) made the film with me. Today, when you see the way Danger Lanka looks, if I looked like that in the film, it is not the story, not the narrative… I think Panipat had a lot of good qualities in it, I don’t think it’s a bad film, I think it could be much better, but for various reasons that’s again an open conversation,” Arjun reflected as he spoke to The Hollywood Reporter India.

The actor acknowledged that social media played a significant role in amplifying the criticism, making it harder to cope. “It was also a starting point for a lot of Instagram chatter that was getting created. Till what 2016- 2017 social media didn’t have this prominence. Actually Twitter (now X) had a lot more positivity when it started. It was a place where (Ranbir Kapoor’s) Rocket Singh was a cult film. You went there to understand…and then it became a mainstream medium and that’s what happened to Instagram also.”

However, Arjun credits his father, film producer Boney Kapoor, for teaching him the value of resilience. “He is never despondent. I think we are cut from the same cloth but circumstantially he has taken a lot of punches and he is a very resilient man by nature. And this should go without saying that the upbringing he had was very different from mine. I had to deal with emotional punches, he’s had to deal with financial punches. At the end of the day he is a businessman who takes a chance. He is a gambler at heart because he is also a flamboyant creative man.”

Admiring his father’s ability to bounce back from setbacks, Arjun shared that it has a lot to do with his upbringing. He said, “He will go all out. He is the kind of person whose biopic will be great. There are anecdotes after anecdotes… Some people are rich, some do not have the money but are raees (wealthy), my father is a raees aadmi (wealthy man). But you have to understand that it also develops a dread inside me because I have seen the space of him, of what he is going through. So I have realised that the way he deals with people, I cannot try to be him, that’s his personality. So what he does is very unique. I am (cut) from the same cloth but I am very internal, maybe he is very external, maybe he’ll never ever let things affect him. Whereas I go within myself. I don’t know how he does it, I wish I did, I think it’s commendable”. He also spoke about how Boney dealt with Roop Ki Rani and Choron Ka Raja flopping. Considered Hindi cinema’s most expensive film, he as a producer took four years to pay back the debt.

Arjun then shared that it’s not just his father but also uncle, actor Anil Kapoor, from whom he continues to learn a lot about work. He said, “You meet Anil Kapoor, and he’s like, ‘role de de yaar (give me work).’ He is the world’s best struggler, sometimes I call him that because he is still looking at a director and saying, ‘when will you cast me?’ I would always be scared of making Anil Chachu meet Rohit Shetty as he would say, ‘mereko le le yaar…’ and I love that about him.”

Arjun plays the negative lead Danger Lanka in Singham Again and is receiving a lot of praise for his role. The film stars Ajay Devgn in the lead along with Kareena Kapoor Khan, Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Tiger Shroff.
