Arbaaz Khan is ‘nikamma’; he’d run away from Dabangg set at first sign of trouble: Anurag Kashyap’s brother unleashes new tirade
Dabangg director Abhinav Kashyap spoke about his dreadful experience working with Arbaaz Khan on Dabangg, his debut film. He said that Arbaaz would often disappear from the set when a problem arose.

Filmmaker Abhinav Kashyap, who made his directorial debut with Salman Khan-starrer Dabangg, has often voiced his poor opinion of the actor and his family. After accusing Salman of being a ‘goon’ in a recent interview with SCREEN, Abhinav doubled down on his hatred for the Khan family, and singled out Arbaaz Khan in a new interview. He said that the family wanted to set Arbaaz up as a producer because his acting career was going nowhere, but Arbaaz wasn’t equipped to handle the responsibilities. Abhinav said that the family ‘harassed’ him during the film’s production, but they handled things amicably. Things only soured after the film was completed, and the family realised they had a winner on their hands.
In an interview with Bollywood Thikana, Abhinav said that he was shortchanged by Arbaaz, and his payments were withheld until the production was complete. By then, he was up to his neck in debt. Asked about the war for credit that erupted after the film’s success, with several parties claiming that they were responsible for it, Abhinav admitted that the songs were not his idea, but said that Salman would sometimes declare that he didn’t want to shoot a certain scene at all. Abhinav would then give him alternate options, but he said that Salman can’t take credit for the changes because he didn’t come up with them.
He said, “The film turned out better than they imagined. That’s when the harassment began. They would twist my arm and demand sudden action scenes, refuse to come to shoot, be stubborn about things, create scenes. I was stuck. This is what they mean when they say ‘ab Razia gundo mein phas gayi‘… Salman’s go-to move was to say, ‘I’m not doing this’. Then, I would provide options.”
He continued, “Arbaaz had nothing to do with anything. He’s a gadha, a nikamma, he is clueless. Throughout Dabangg, whenever I would want something, he would run away. We were shooting in Panchgani, and he would drive off to Mumbai at the first sign of trouble. He wouldn’t answer my calls, and when he did, he would say, ‘Just manage’. Then, when the film turned out good, they started worrying about the credit…” Abhinav said that it was because they were afraid that all the credit would go to him that they started to plant stories in the press, saying that they came up with most of the film’s best parts.
In the interview with SCREEN, Abhinav described the Khan family as vindictive, and said, “He (Salman Khan) is the father of the star system in Bollywood. He is from a film family which has been in the industry since 50 years. He continues the process. They are vindictive people. They control the whole process. If you don’t agree with them, they come after you.” Abhinav went on to direct the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Besharam, which flopped at the box office. Salman returned to star in two sequels to Dabangg, which Abhinav wasn’t involved in.
