AR Rahman says there is no chilling or clubbing with Imtiaz Ali because he doesn’t smoke or drink: ‘Clubbing for me is music…’
AR Rahman, who recently collaborated with Imtiaz Ali for Amar Singh Chamkila, has now opened up about how he prefers to spend his free time.

Music maestro AR Rahman, who is currently at Cannes 2024, has unveiled the music documentary Headhunting to Beatboxing at the film festival. The composer, who recently collaborated with Imtiaz Ali for Amar Singh Chamkila, has now opened up about how he prefers to spend his free time.
When Sucharita Tyagi asked Rahman what he, Irshad, and Imtiaz do when they’re not making music—whether they sit together jamming or brainstorming—he responded, “That never happens.”
The composer continued, “I think there’s no chilling out because I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, so there’s no chilling. Clubbing for me is music.” When asked what he prefers doing in his free time, Rahman quipped, “I go to Cannes,” adding, “I’m not making any music. I’m just doing other things, so that’s in a way actually chilling out.”

Previously, Imtiaz Ali had said that AR Rahman contributed to Amar Singh Chamkila’s making by giving few very interesting ideas. Imtiaz also opened up about the conversation he had with Rahman and how the singer told him to be strong.
In an interview with Galatta Plus, Imtiaz said, “I had an interesting conversation with Rahman sir. He called me soon after the release of Chamkila and he said that everyone was saying I am back. So where were you? He said people can be cruel. He wanted to prepare me to not feel bad when people say you are back because it also demeans what you have done before this. He also told me that every 2-3 years, people will tell you that you are finished. He said you have to be strong and one way to be that is to have your own analysis.”
