Anurag Kashyap says he currently has ‘five unreleased films’; complains about ‘algorithm and box office’ conversations dominating creativity
Anurag Kashyap said that people in power only look at films through the lens of algorithms and box office.

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has always been very vocal about the norms of the industry. Earlier, he had commented on how the industry is doomed if it continues heading in the direction that it is, and recently, in a conversation with Bollywood Hungama, the director once again didn’t mince his words as he spoke about the ‘creative desperation’ that filmmakers like him are experiencing. Reflecting on his five unreleased films, he said that people in power don’t understand good cinema.
He said, “There is creative desperation that we all have to deal with individually. We want to make good films, but people do not understand them. The more good films are released, the more they will realise that they shouldn’t make decisions on the basis of algorithms or the box office.”
While discussing how many of his films are yet to see the light of day, Anurag said, “My first film, Paanch, was not released. I have five unreleased feature films, Paanch is one of them. Out of these five, two are releasing, and hopefully, the third one will also be released.”
Anurag is currently promoting the film Stolen, which stars Abhishek Banerjee, and has been released on Amazon Prime Video. Kiran Rao, Nikkhil Advani, and Vikramaditya Motwane are the executive producers on this project, along with Anurag. The thriller has been directed by Karan Tejpal and produced by Gaurav Dhingra. Stolen is the story of two brothers from an urban city who become eyewitnesses to a baby being kidnapped from its poor mother at a railway station in rural India.
In the past, Anurag has spoken about wanting to quit the Hindi film industry, which he described as creatively bankrupt. He said that the industry would first need to experience rock bottom before it can be rebuilt.
