Before becoming professional partners, filmmakers Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane were good friends. In a recent interaction, the two spoke about their bond and revealed how they first met at Mumbai’s Xavier Institute of Communications (XIC), where Motwane was studying with Anurag’s first wife, Aarti Bajaj. They later worked together on Deepa Mehta’s Water, where Motwane was an assistant director, and Anurag was the dialogue writer.

Talking about their first meeting, Anurag said, “I recalled meeting him at XIC because Aarti was his classmate.” Motwane shared, “I was under substance abuse those days, so I don’t remember. I am a different man now.” Anurag quickly chimed in, “He has been sober for 24-25 years now.”

Discussing how Motwane used to be an angry person back in the day, Anurag told The Hollywood Reporter, “He was a very different human being, always quick to anger. He was angry with the world, always shouting, while I was already working in the industry. I learned photography, sound, and so many things from him. He had an understanding of the world, and I would take from him. I knew what he was capable of, but he was his own enemy. He didn’t even earn a rupee back then. I used to write scripts for him, knowing they wouldn’t get made.”

Anurag also revealed that Motwane made him cry on the release day of his film critically acclaimed film Dev D. He said, “I wept like a child. Dev D’s premiere was happening, and the first review came out, giving the film five stars. We had disagreed a lot on Dev D because he had only done the first draft. I changed his draft, and he hated the ending.” He added, “I read the first review and called him to tell him about it. He said, ‘Shove those five stars up your a**; the film could have been better.’ And I was howling at the premiere.”

Anurag also shared that Motwane used to be so angry that he would break things on set. However, the filmmaker has now calmed down and no longer resorts to such actions. “He had one problem, but he quit it before this century started. He had other problem and would I get to know about it from the set. However, he calms himself down now. I know that he broke a chair on Udaan and smashed a slogan board on Bhavesh Joshi sets. But now, he doesn’t break anything,” he said.

On the professional front, Vikramaditya Motwane is currently enjoying the success of his web show Black Warrant. Anurag, on the other hand, has received heaps of praise for his role as an antagonist in Rifle Club, which also marks his acting debut in Malayalam cinema.
