Anupam Kher and his wife, Kirron Kher, have been married for almost four decades. In a recent interaction, Anupam shared details about their long-standing friendship, which began during their college days in Chandigarh, and eventually blossomed into love after they reconnected in Mumbai. At the time, Kirron was married, while Anupam was struggling to find work in the film industry. However, fate had other plans, and their friendship evolved into something deeper as they both faced challenges in their respective relationships.

Speaking to Shubhankar Mishra, Anupam reminisced, “I wasn’t married; Kirron was married, and we were best friends for 12 years. She was my senior in college. She was a star—she was first in her class, the best actress, and an India-level badminton player. I moved to Mumbai, and she came to Mumbai after her marriage to Gautam Berry. As strugglers, Satish Kaushik and I would often go to Kirron and Gautam’s house for dinner, and she would give us Rs 50 for a taxi, but we would save that money and travel by bus instead.”

Anupam shared how their relationship shifted from friendship to love, recalling, “When she was going through a tough time in her marriage, and I was going through a bad relationship—after the girl I was with had ditched me—Kirron and I fell in love and got married.”

Anupam and Kirron tied the knot a year after the release of Anupam’s debut film Saaransh. In the same interview, Anupam also mentioned that his stepson, actor Sikander, still lives with them.
