Anupam Kher’s father died of starvation, rejected food and water as it tasted like sand and acid: ‘He spoke to me, died after 20 minutes’
Anupam Kher recalls his early days of struggle in the film industry, as well as the emotional memory of his father’s passing, who tragically died of starvation due to a rare illness.

In an industry often characterised by its glitz and glamour, stories of struggle, especially from outsiders, remain both humbling and inspiring. While the casting landscape in Bollywood has evolved significantly over the past two decades, offering more opportunities for emerging talent, the path to success continues to be anything but easy. Veteran actor Anupam Kher, one of the earliest examples of an outsider who carved a successful career in Hindi cinema, recently opened up about his difficult early days in Mumbai. In a recent interview, Anupam reflected on his journey from a small-town boy with big dreams to one of India’s most respected actors.
He shared that there was a time when he spent 27 days on a platform in Bandra. “Struggling days were horrible. I slept on the railway platform in Bandra East for 27 days. And the cops didn’t drive me away as I used to sleep around 1:20 a.m., before the last train would arrive. And one of the cops was very kind. I actually met his son about four years ago. He said to me, ‘Aapko yaad hai woh police wale bade ache thay.’ (Do you remember? That policemen were really kind) So there is a lot of kindness in the world,” he shared with Filmfare. Anupam also spoke about the spirit of the industry during those early years. He recalled how, despite having no offers on the table, filmmakers and writers would still take time to meet struggling actors like himself.
It was one such meeting that proved life-changing, his introduction to filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. Bhatt cast him in Saaransh (1984), a role that would become a turning point in his career. Portraying a 60-year-old man mourning the loss of his only son, Anupam’s performance earned him widespread critical acclaim. In the same conversation, Anupam also opened up about one of the most emotional chapters of his life: the death of his father. The actor recalled the deeply personal and surreal experience of watching his father slowly succumb to an illness that made food and water unbearable for him.

“He died of starvation because he got a strange disease, where, for him, food started to feel like sand. And water felt like acid. So he would throw things away. He became very frail,” he shared. Anupam recaleld that by the end, his father could not gather much energy to communicate and tried to write something for his son, but could only manage to draw some lines.
“Because he didn’t have the energy to form words or sentences. To make him feel better, I just responded in a very generalised way, ‘Of course.’ He looked a little disappointed. Then he called me closer. I leaned in, my ears almost touching his mouth. And this man, who was going to die in the next 20 minutes, whispered his last two words to me: ‘Live life.’ That was phenomenal. A dying man… telling you to live life. Because he had lived his,” he recalled.
