Anubhav Sinha believes Ra.One was ‘harshly judged’ when it released, says people now call it ‘ahead of its time’
Director Anubhav Sinha said that people online call Ra.One ahead of its times and in his belief, that is a sign of the film's success.

Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Ra.One was widely panned when it was released in 2011, but over the years, the film’s VFX have been reappraised. Anubhav Sinha, who directed the film, believes that Ra.One “lives on online,” where people call it “ahead of its time.” In a recent chat, he said that the online conversation about the film is a sign of its “success,” and said that Ra.One was “harshly judged” at the time of its release.
When asked about the criticism that the film received, Sinha told DNA, “It’s not for me to say this because I would always find criticism harsher. But if someone not involved with the film says it was harsh, I would obviously latch on to that.”
Sinha was perhaps referring to Shah Rukh Khan’s statement about Ra.One having flopped. In an earlier chat with Connect FM Canada, Sinha had said that he was heartbroken when he read SRK’s statement, and said, “My heart was broken. I thought to myself, ‘How could Shah Rukh say this?'” He said that the actor “had given the film his all” but added, “He was hurt, that’s probably why he said what he said. I was hurt by what he said, but I was young then.”
In the new interview, Sinha insisted that the film has garnered appreciation online. “I am a big believer of how long a film lives determines its legacy. The fact that a film that was so harshly judged and criticised 12 years back lives on online with people calling it ahead of its time speaks volumes. Then, that is the film’s success and it gives me a lot of happiness,” he said.
Also starring Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal, Ra.One was designed as a superhero film which probably could have had a sequel. But the film’s reception at the time was extremely poor, which stalled all chances of a follow-up.
