Anil Kapoor left Anthony Hopkins surprised as he touched his feet after Slumdog Millionaire win: ‘He said what are you doing?’
Anil Kapoor said that Anthony Hopkins was surprised when he touched his feet after winning for Slumdog Millionaire.

It was almost 15 years ago that Anil Kapoor traveled the world for Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire. The film, which ended up winning eight Oscars at the 81st Academy Awards, won big at many other international film awards as well and in one such award ceremony, the team was honoured by international actor Anthony Hopkins and Anil recently recalled his interaction with the Silence of the Lambs star while he was on stage.
Talking to Indiewire, Anil said that as the team of Slumdog Millionaire won the award for the Best Ensemble at the SAG Awards, Anil got up on stage and touched Anthony’s feet. In India, touching another person’s feet is a mark of of showing them respect but Anthony had no clue about this custom so he was a little taken aback. Anil shared, “We received Best Ensemble, and your peers all over the world have given you this award, so it is a great moment. I land up on the stage and there is Anthony Hopkins, and so I just went and touched his feet. He said, ‘What are you doing?’ I said that’s how Indians are; I respect you, you’re elder to me, you’re senior to me, and it was wonderful to be on a stage and receive that award.”
Even though it has been a decade and a half since Anil’s appearance in Slumdog Millionaire, he still gets recognised internationally for his work in the film and the actor said that he is “really surprised” by that. “I get really surprised sometimes at the kind of people who still know me, still remember me, and want to work with me. It’s still continuing,” he said. Anil shared that international projects are still written with him in mind and he believes himself to be quite “fortunate” as people still remember his work. “They say, ‘I’ve written the role with you in mind.’ I get a shock. ‘Slumdog’ released 14 years back. And ‘Mission: Impossible’ and ’24,’ it’s been so many years, but there are certain filmmakers and casting directors who still remember me. I’m very fortunate,” he said.

Anil recalled the time when he was a “recognisable face almost all over the planet” and said that if he was younger, he would “have really taken more advantage of it.” “But I took a decision that OK, fine, if it happens, if I find something more exciting, I’ll do it. Otherwise, I’m very content, happy being in my own country and being with my family,” he said.
Anil was recently seen in Siddharth Anand’s Fighter and Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal.
