Anil Sharma on Gadar 2 possibly breaking Pathaan’s all-time record: ‘Our box office numbers are real, not fake’
Anil Sharma reflected on the success of Gadar 2, and spoke about the possibility of the film overtaking the all-time Hindi record set by Shah Rukh Khan's Pathaan.

As Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel’s Gadar 2 approaches the Rs 430 crore mark at the domestic box office after successfully completing a fortnight in theatres, the film’s director Anil Sharma has commented on its mega success, and the possibility of overtaking Pathaan’s all-time record for a Hindi movie. Released earlier this year, the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer made Rs 540 crore in India, and grossed more than Rs 1,000 crore worldwide.
In a recent interview, Sharma opened up about how he, along with the film’s star Sunny Deol, never paid heed to the box office hype. He said that they wanted to “make a space in people’s hearts” with Gadar 2, and they have successfully managed to do that.
In an interview with India.com, Sharma shared that Gadar 2 will not be released on OTT anytime soon as the film is still running in cinema halls successfully. He said, “People won’t get to watch Gadar 2 on OTT anytime soon, as the film is still in the theatres, it will start streaming after 6 to 8 months. Till then, so many people would have already watched the film in theatres, and so many have done so already… We’ve managed to excite the audience, and that’s the biggest success for the film.”
Asked how he looks at his film possibly overtaking Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, Sharma said, “I don’t believe in numbers, Pathaan has done exceptionally well, even KGF (Chapter 2) did extremely well, and now, Gadar 2 is performing as well. Now, let’s see how far it goes, how far the public takes it. It is the public’s film. We have already crossed Rs 400 crore, it will reach Rs 500 crore mark in the coming week and maybe the Rs 1,000 crore mark at some point. So, we are not looking at numbers alone, we are trying to make a place in people’s hearts. People are watching it and loving it, that’s enough for us. Whatever (box office) numbers have come out today are real, there is nothing fake.”
Gadar 2 was released on August 11, alongside Akshay Kumar-starrer OMG 2. The film made Rs 40 crore on opening day, but peaked on Independence Day, when it made Rs 55 crore.
