Kangana Ranaut's solo directorial debut Emergency may not have performed well at the box office back when it released in theatres earlier this year. However, it's been receiving some rave reviews from the audience who watched the period political drama on Netflix India after its digital premiere. On Sunday, Kangana took to her Instagram Stories and responded to fans who shared words of appreciation for her film. An Instagram user shared on their Story, ""#EmergencyOnNetflix should go for the Oscars from India. Kangana, what a film." Kangana reposted the message on her Story and wrote, "But America wouldn't like to acknowledge its real face, how they bully, suppress and arm twist developing nations. It's been exposed in #emergency. They can keep their silly Oscar. We have National Awards." In the film, Kangana plays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. During the 1971 India-Pakistan War, Indira is seen visiting then-US President Richard Nixon at the White House in Washington DC, requesting him to not aid Pakistan. Richard mocks at Indira's sari, which she takes offence to. Later, when Richard sends American troops to occupy Bangladesh, Indira makes sure the Indian Army is already there before the US troops reach the shore, leading to the liberation of Bangladesh. Interestingly, Kangana is already a four-time National Award winner. She first won the Best Supporting Actress honour for Madhur Bhandarkar's 2009 film Fashion. She followed that up with wins in the Best Actress category for Vikas Bahl's Queen (2013), Aanand L Rai's Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015), and Krish's historical drama Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2019), which was also co-directed by her. On Sunday, she reposted another compliment from a fan and wrote, "People are calling my acting in #emergency amazing and my best ever, could I surpass Queen, TWM2, Fashion, Thalaivi? Watch #emergency and find out (tricolour emojis)." The film also stars Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan, Shreyas Talpade as former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Mahima Chaudhry as Pupul Jayakar, Milind Soman as Field Marshall Sam Manekshaw, Vishak Nair as Sanjay Gandhi, and the late Satish Kaushik as Jagjivan Ram. Co-produced by Zee Studios and Kangana's banner Manikarnika Films, Emergency released in cinemas on January 17. The film faced several hurdles prior to its release. Last year, the Central Board of Film Certification withdrew its certification after certain Sikh groups objected to the film and the portrayal of Khalistan. Kangana made some necessary changes to her film before it was finally cleared for release in January.
