The life of the late Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila has once again surged into the limelight following the release of Imtiaz Ali’s eponymous film. Chamkila, renowned for his unique style of music, had a tumultuous personal life that remains a subject of interest even 36 years after his tragic demise. In a recent interview with BBC Hindi, Jaswant Kaur, elder sister of Amarjot, shed light on the complexities of their relationship with Chamkila. She revealed that the singer had kept his prior marriage hidden from Amarjot’s family.

“There were no plans of Amarjot’s marriage. Chamkila didn’t tell us that he is already married. He told us that he is unmarried. My father had two conditions – that the boy should be singer and unmarried. They finally tied the knot. After the birth of Amarjot and Chamkila’s son, we got to know about his first marriage,” she said.

Chamkila, who was widely popular among the masses and was known as the ‘Elvis Presley of Punjab,’ was assassinated in 1988 along with Amarjot. However, the case was never solved and no arrests were made. “It has been 36 years but we still haven’t gotten any justice, no file was opened. We demand that the perpetrators should be arrested and punished. We have lost our family members so they should be punished,” Jaswant said.

In an earlier interview with Cine Punjabi, Chamkila’s former secretary, Manku, unveiled chilling details about the assassination. He recounted the harrowing scene of Chamkila and Amarjot’s murder, stating, “One person next to me described what she saw, I was too scared to look out. She said, ‘There are three men, they’re doing the bhangra. They’ve kept a letter on Chamkila’s chest’. I saw that letter later, I read it. It was drenched in blood. They left on scooters. I picked up the bodies myself.”

The film Amar Singh Chamkila sees Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra portraying the roles of the slain singers.
