Ali Fazal on backing Girls Will Be Girls: ‘Richa and I had to break our FDs to produce the film’

During the latest edition of Screen LIVE, Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal, who were promoting their maiden production venture, Girls Will Be Girls, opened up about how they managed to back this film directed by debut filmmaker Shuchi Talati.

What truly is the hallmark of a struggler who made it big in their life is to see how they turn around and be of help to fellow strugglers come up the ladder with lesser obstacles in their path. One such endeavour of actors Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal is their maiden home production, Girls Will Be Girls, under their banner Pushing Buttons Studios. Directed by debutant filmmaker Shuchi Talati, the film also stars newcomers Preeti Panigrahi and Kesav Binoy Kiron, who play the leads, alongside top-tier talent, Kani Kusruti.

In the latest edition of Screen LIVE, Richa and Ali talked about Girls Will be Girls, which is making waves in the festival circuit, and recently made its digital premiere on Amazon Prime Video. Talking about how ideas shouldn’t be limited by funds in the ideating stage, Ali said, “We are all from a country that is famous for its jugaad… its ability to figure out a way to get things done. Honestly, we asked for money from here and there, and even broke our FDs to fund Girls Will be Girls. But we managed. Now, it is getting a nice release, and many sections of audience are watching it. It is possible”

Richa Chadha also pointed out how collaborations help in bringing these ideas to screen. “For instance, this film was edited in France. It received a grant because of the core idea of the film,” said the actor.

Ali Fazal also opened up about the vision of their production house, and said, “Our place is open for collaborations, and would love to listen to a lot of ideas. We hope we can produce more films like these, and make it reach a wider audience.”
