After Shah Rukh, Diljit, Kiara’s Met debuts, Janhvi Kapoor calls out trolls for calling it ‘Chandivalification of Met’: ‘Colonial trauma hasn’t left us’
Actor Janhvi Kapoor took to her Instagram and commented on a post which was discussing the sudden influx of Indian celebrities at the Met Gala.

Actor Janhvi Kapoor had an unapologetic reply for all those who questioned the growth of the Indian contingent at the Met Gala this year. A post on Instagram highlighted a comment made about the influx of Indian celebrities at the highly coveted and sought-after event. Janhvi didn’t hold back as she typed out a rather long and detailed comment which mentioned how Indian designers deserve to be in the spotlight and how this opportunity couldn’t have come sooner. Some of the Indian celebrities that made an appearance were, Shah Rukh Khan, Kiara Advani, Diljit Dosanjh, Priyanka Chopra, Sabyasachi and Manish Malhotra.
The comment in question which started the entire debate referred to Indian representation as ‘Chandivalification of the Met’, implying that the exclusivity and quality of the event have somehow dropped. Kapoor hit back with a long reply where she defended the Indian celebrities and designers and appreciated the work put in by the latter for arguably the most important day on the fashion calendar.
The comment read, “It was high time. Our artisans and designers are the best in the world; they deserve the spotlight on a global stage like the Met, as do our icons. Shouldn’t we be happy we’re finally getting our due instead of salty about how seeing our own people on this platform is making it seem a little less aspirational? Might I say our garments were amongst the most spectacular?”
She continued her onslaught as she questioned the inherent classism of the trolls and pointed out that for many years, the West has borrowed our jewels, fabrics and styles without any credit and that she is glad that the Indian people are getting a chance to represent their heritage and work. She concluded with, “If anything, the sense of pride I felt seeing our artists and garments at the Met made the whole affair seem even more magical.”
While Janhvi was not one of the Indian celebrities that walked the carpet at the Met this year, she voiced her support for the actors and designers. Many users replied to Janhvi and appreciated her taking a stand, with one user commenting, “This is why I love you. Your Cannes debut this year is going to be ICONIC, princess.” Janhvi Kapoor will most likely be travelling to the Cannes Film Festival this year after her movie Homebound got selected at the prestigious event. It also includes Ishaan Khatter and has notably been backed by Hollywood phenom Martin Scorsese.
