Years after saying Sanjay Leela Bhansali would ‘hit and abuse’ him, Ranbir Kapoor lists ‘conditions’ for working with him in Love and War

Ranbir Kapoor had previously opened up about working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali as an assistant director and said the filmmaker used to make him kneel down "for hours" and even "hit" him.

Ranbir Kapoor has come of age. The actor, who is gearing up to re-team with his Sawaariya director Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the epic Love and War, has reportedly come on board with a set of “terms and conditions” in his contract.

The move comes after Ranbir had previously opened up about working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali as an assistant director in his National Award-winning feature Black revealing how the filmmaker used to make him kneel down “for hours”, “hit” them and “abuse” them.

With the new film Love and War, in which he will be co-starring with his actor wife Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal, Ranbir apparently signed the film listing strict diktats, which includes “proper discipline” on sets. According to a Bollywood Hungama report, Ranbir has put all the terms and conditions of working in the contract to ensure a “civil shooting environment”, with the Animal star asking Sanjay Leela Bhansali to “stick to the timelines of the shoot.”

“The maker has promised to take the film on floors in November and wrap it by July 2025. Ranbir has other commitments from August 2025, so he has requested SLB to wrap up the film on time. The other condition is to have fixed working hours. During Sawaariya, RK was subject to erratic work timing, and he doesn’t want the episode to repeat again in 2024. The last condition is to ensure proper discipline on the set in all departments,” the report read.

The report further added that Alia Bhatt, who had worked in the filmmaker’s Gangubai “Kathiawadi, was instrumental in the two “sorting” their issues and asked the duo to “put all the terms and conditions” on the face in the meeting.

In 2021, Ranbir Kapoor had famously recalled his time as an assistant to Bhansali and said, “When I assisted Mr (Sanjay Leela) Bhansali (on ‘Black’), he used to really treat me as an assistant director. I used to be kneeling down for hours, he used to hit us, he used to abuse us… that only hardens you and prepares you for the world.”
