Two historic blockbusters in nine months, but for Shah Rukh Khan, picture abhi baaki hai. After the record-breaking success of his spy actioner Pathaan and the recently released Jawan, the superstar is gearing up for his last film of the year– Dunki.

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, Dunki is billed as a comedy drama and is scheduled to release on December 22. The film marks Shah Rukh’s first collaboration with Hirani, known for blockbusters like Sanju, PK, 3 Idiots and the Munna Bhai series.

While talking to Deadline during the Red Sea Festival, Shah Rukh had called Dunki a “big journey film” about a group of people wanting to return home — their country India.

The actor said Dunki will be a film high on comedy as well as drama, following the beats of a Rajkumar Hirani film. Dunki, Shah Rukh said, will also be a film about the country.

Watch Shah Rukh Khan talk about Dunki:

“In English it would be called ‘Donkey’ but the way a part of the country pronounces donkey in India–the Punjabis– it is ‘dunki’. It is a film directed by one of the most brilliant filmmakers we have in the country, Rajkumar Hirani. It is written by a fantastic writer, Abhijat Joshi.

“It is a story of people who want to come back home when you finally get the calling. His films are always a mix of comedy and a lot of emotions, about the country. It is a big journey film, it goes through different areas around the world and finally comes back home, to India,” he added.

Dunki is one of the most awaited films of the year and will be aiming to continue Shah Rukh’s blockbuster streak at the box office. The film also stars Taapsee Pannu and reportedly features Vicky Kaushal in a cameo.

But before Dunki takes over, Shah Rukh will be seen in a special appearance in Tiger 3. Headlined by Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, the big scale actioner will see Salman and Shah Rukh together on screen again after their memorable sequence in Pathaan. The film is scheduled to release in Diwali.
