Actor Aamir Khan is quite popular in China. His films 3 Idiots, Dangal, and Secret Superstar have been huge successes at the Chinese box office. Aamir’s movies resonate emotionally with fans in the country, who lovingly call him “Uncle Aamir.” At the Waves Summit 2025, the actor-filmmaker spoke about the reception of his films in China and the possibility of an Indo-Chinese production starring talent from both nations.

Calling the Indian and Chinese audience “similar”, Aamir said, “I feel that the audience in China, their cultural flavours, and the emotions of people there are very similar to the emotions of Indians. So, the Chinese audience reacts in a very similar way to content like people do here. That’s what my experience was when I was watching a couple of my films on the big screen in China. The way the audience was reacting to Dangal. There was absolutely no difference between an Indian audience and the Chinese audience reacting to the film. It was almost identical.”

He added, “I think that India has a very vibrant and creative community and so does China. They have amazing, creative people. I have been to China a number of times. I have seen their live events and movies. The standard of their work is clearly world-class.”

Talking about the possibility of an Indo-Chinese film, Aamir Khan shared, “I think collaboration with China is a win-win—creatively, from a business perspective, and on an emotional level. In fact, over the years, I have been in discussions with my friends in China and we have often explored the possibility. Now, with WAVES coming in, it will give a further drive towards there.”

He continued, “If you look at an Indo-Chinese film – a star from China and a star from India, that’s roughly half of the population of earth. So, you have a huge audience already for it. And, both India and China are very ancient civilizations with a lot of history.”

Meanwhile, on the work front, Aamir Khan will next be seen in Sitaare Zameen Par, which is a spiritual sequel to Taare Zameen Par (2007). It is set to hit the theatres in December, this year.
