‘Don’t attribute Aamir Khan’s stardom to his family background,’ says Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak co-star Dalip Tahil: ‘He created his own platform’

Dalip Tahil reveals Aamir Khan became a star the moment audiences saw him in the Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak song ‘Papa Kehte Hain’.

Aamir Khan's first film became a huge blockbuster and revived the romance genreAamir Khan made his debut with the film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak.

Aamir Khan’s entry into cinema is the kind of debut that remains etched in the memory of Indian film lovers. Almost overnight, he became the nation’s heartthrob, thanks to his phenomenal performance in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s timeless romantic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet.

In a recent conversation with Galatta India, veteran actor Dalip Tahil, who played Aamir’s father in the film, opened up about witnessing Aamir’s meteoric rise first-hand. Dalip recalls how the young actor’s confidence and involvement in his debut project were evident right from the beginning.

“Aamir was extremely confident even back then,” said the actor. “Nasir Saab (the film’s producer) once told me that several character actors had rejected the role of the father simply because they couldn’t see themselves playing such a part at that age. I never questioned it. I didn’t even think of it as a ‘father’s role’, the character was so powerful that it never felt like a compromise.”

Dalip Tahil continued to praise Aamir Khan’s approach on set: “It was his first film, but his involvement, his suggestions — even back then — were what the world sees in him today, whether it’s in Taare Zameen Par, Dangal, or Sitaare Zameen Par. It was always there in him.” Dalip was firm in stating that Aamir’s stardom isn’t a product of his film lineage, but of raw, undeniable talent.

“Don’t attribute this to his family background. Aamir created his own platform. People made him a star from his very first film. They loved him from the moment they saw him in that song, Papa Kehte Hain Bada Naam Karega. The moment he walked in with the guitar in that shot, bang! He became a star. That’s what we call star power. And from there, he built his place in the industry, film by film.”

Aamir Khan was last seen in Sitaare Zameen Par, which earned around Rs 167.3 crore at the box office, providing a much-needed comeback after a string of commercial disappointments like Thugs of Hindostan and Laal Singh Chaddha. He is now preparing for his next project, a biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke, which will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani.
