Once a student picks a non-medical stream in Class 11, a majority of them think to get admission into the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). But why IIT? Are they so prestigious? Well, looking at the National Institute Ranking Framework 2024, it seems so. In the overall category of the NIRF 2024, seven spots are with IITs, and the rest are with other universities.

So, there are some entrance examinations through which a candidate can study at IIT. We will know in detail about all of them, so let’s get started.
JEE Main is the first stage of the entrance process for IITs which is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It is open to students who have completed or are in their final year of Class 12 with a focus on science subjects.
JEE not only makes a student eligible for IIT but they can also apply to NIT, IIIT, and CFTIs. This is the official website of JEE, jeemain.nta.ac.in, where students will fill out and complete the form and pay the registration fees.
For the admission to IITs, JEE advanced is the second stage. Candidates should be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (including all categories) in BE or BTech paper of JEE (Main). A candidate can attempt JEE (Advanced) maximum of two times in two consecutive years. The question papers of the JEE Advanced will consist of questions designed to test comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability of candidates.
Rank lists are prepared based on the aggregate marks in JEE (Advanced). A candidate is said to have qualified in JEE (Advanced) if the candidate secures the minimum percentage of marks in each subject and in aggregate, as per respective category, read the information brochure.
The Joint Entrance Examination (Main and advanced) are for those students who want to apply for BTech, BS, dual degrees, and IDDDP programmes. The national level Main exam is to screen students who will then appear for JEE Advanced. Once a candidate cracks JEE advanced they are eligible to get into IITs.
The Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED) is for BDes courses in IITs. Students who have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) or appearing in any stream are eligible to appear for UCEED. This year UCEED was conducted in January 21. A student can give a maximum of two attempts.
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level examination that tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts, and humanities. The examination for the GATE 2025 will be held between February 1 to 16 and the registration for the same has been started.
Candidates can fill out the application form at the official website — gate2025.iitr.ac.in. In the application form, the candidate has to fill in personal information including name, date of birth, personal mobile number, parents’ name, parents’ and mobile number among other fields.
Students currently studying in the third or higher years of any undergraduate degree programme or who have completed any government-approved degree programme in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts, and humanities are eligible to appear for the exam to be held in 2025.
The registration for the Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) has been started and it will conclude on October 11. JAM is the way through which students can get admission to MSc and integrated PhD programmes in various science and technology disciplines offered by IITs, IISc, and other collaborating institutions.
Candidates will first need to register themselves on JOAPS website by filling the credentials like name, email address, mobile number and password. Once the registration is successful, the candidate’s enrolment id and OTP will be sent to the e-mail address and mobile number for the verification.
This enrollment id, email address and password will be used later for submission of application, hence, should be kept safe and confidential.
The Common Entrance Exam for Design (CEED) is for students who want to apply for courses like MDes, PhD programmes in IIT. The scores achieved by the students in the exam is valid for a year.
Candidates must have completed a degree, diploma, post graduate degree programme of minimum three years, or must be appearing for the final examination of such a programme, or must have passed the GD arts diploma programme to apply for the exam.
This year, the examination was conducted on January 21. So far CEED registrations are not open. Candidates can stay updated with Indian Express.
