Teachers’ Day 2024: In India, Teachers’ Day is celebrated on September 5 to recognise the work done by educators including teachers, researchers and professors. This day is observed to honour Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was born on September 5, 1888. He was also posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honour.

Teachers’ Day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the first Vice-President of India and the second President of the nation. Dr Radhakrishnan was an educationist, and out of reverence, once his students asked him if he would allow them to celebrate his birthday.

While he declined any special recognition for himself, Dr Radhakrishnan proposed that students celebrate the day as Teachers’ Day to acknowledge the valuable contributions of teachers to society. Since 1962, September 5 has been observed as Teachers’ Day to pay tribute to his and all teachers’ exceptional contributions to education.

Like every year, the President of India will present the National Award to Teachers on Teachers’ Day 2024. The award acknowledges the remarkable efforts of outstanding teachers who have not only elevated the quality of education but also made a significant impact on their students’ lives.

Teachers’ Day marks a significant occasion for students that provides them with an opportunity to honour and pay tribute to their teachers, mentors and guides. Schools and colleges celebrate this day with great enthusiasm, organising a variety of extracurricular activities. Events including poems, skits, speeches, and other creative performances are arranged to express gratitude and appreciation for the teachers.
