Recently, the Auckland University of Technology (AUT) announced the launch of a summer school course on US pop singer Taylor Swift. The course titled ‘Taylor Swift: Communications Professional’ is Australia’s first university-level course with the global pop icon.

From analysing her visual and audio content to critiquing her branding strategies, the course offers students an opportunity to understand communication principles through the lens of a globally dominant figure in pop culture.

Harvard University (US)

The University of Harvard’s Department of English has announced a course on the singer titled ‘Taylor Swift and Her World’. Registration for the course is on for the Spring term 2025. The course that has its first session from 2023 aims to study her music, lyrics, and cultural impact.

“We will move through Swift’s catalogue, including hits, deep cuts, outtakes, re-recordings, considering songwriting as its art, distinct from poems recited or silently read,” read a statement from the course syllabus.

Ghent University (Belgium)

The Belgium-based university is offering the course titled ‘Literature: Taylor’s version’. According to the syllabus, students through her songs will analyse English literature and explore in depth the tropes, allusions, and intertexts of Swift’s songs. The course will include her music genres both musical and literary, her textual techniques, ways in which she uses her music to craft a shifting public persona among other elements.

Stanford University (US)

The course titled ‘Storytelling with Taylor Swift Through the Eras in 2023’ aims to apply literary analysis tools to her lyrics to gain new insights into her multilayered music, read the website of the University. Being a student-initiated course, Swift’s musical storytelling and literary lyrics will remain the focus areas.

New York University (US)

In 2022, New York University launched its first course to understand Taylor Swift as a musician and her entrepreneurial abilities. The course will also include the legacy of pop culture in the country to understand Swift’s inspiration. In fact, during one of her lectures, she was invited as a guest speaker to educate students.

Arizona University (US)

Psychology of Taylor Swift- Advanced topics of social psychology are what ASU has launched for its students to learn from Swift. The course will draw on her themes, songs, and more.

University of Missouri (US)

An interesting aspect of her songs has been covered by MU and that is of Taylor Swiftory history and literature. This course will analyse her music through the time frame of history and literature. Her songs will be used to explore historical and literary topics as a primary source with histories of pop culture and celebrity, deeper meaning of lyrics, and more.

Other than the above universities, there are a few more courses on Taylor Swift like the Taylor Swift Songbook offered by the University of Texas, The University of Delaware has a course on Taylor Swift and the American Dream. The course will analyse her songs and lyrics in the context of the American dream.
