The Directorate of Medical Education, Training & Research, Arunachal Pradesh, has initiated the process of setting up the state’s second medical college, which will come up at Namsai. The timeline for completion is expected to span a period of about seven years.

At present, Arunachal Pradesh has one functional medical college — the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) in Naharlagun. The institute had initially started with 50 MBBS seats, which was later increased to 100.

According to the tender notice issued by the Directorate, the new medical college will be established using the existing district hospital in Namsai. The plan, indianexpress.com has learnt, is to utilise the current facility, which has around 100 beds, with an additional 320 beds, taking the total capacity to about 420.

The new medical college will offer 100 MBBS seats, which will raise the total number of seats in the state to 200.

The plan for a second medical college was first announced by Chief Minister Pema Khandu in November last year. He had said that the project would be executed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Tenders have already been floated and potential private partners with the required expertise, and those meeting the requirements of the Arunachal Pradesh government as well as the Union Health Ministry, are under consideration. Speaking at an induction programme at TRIHMS, Khandu had also indicated that a medical college will come up at Namsai, followed by one at Pasighat under the PPP mode.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs 356.60 crore. A bidding process will now determine the private partner that will execute the project through the PPP model, making use of the existing hospital facilities as the base for the expansion.
