National Science Day is celebrated to commemorate the discovery of the Raman Effect. National Science Day is observed on February 28 every year across the country to mark and celebrate the contributions of scientists towards the development of India.
On February 28, 1928, CV Raman announced the discovery of the Raman Effect and for it, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930.
The theme for this year’s National Science Day celebration is “Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat.”
The National Science Day theme for this year’s celebration reflects a strategic focus to promote public appreciation for science, technology and innovation and accomplishments of Indian scientists to address challenges through home-grown technologies for over-all well-being.
The theme this year will not only mark a new era but also seek to present an opportunity for the public and scientific fraternity, both domestically and internationally, to collaborate, work together, and contribute to the well-being of India and humanity as a whole, a Ministry of Science and Technology statement said.
The government of India designated February 28 as National Science Day in 1986. On this occasion, theme-based science communication activities are carried out all over the country.
