
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna on May 21 held its tenth convocation. A total of 630 students were awarded degrees in various branches of engineering, science, and social sciences including Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Humanities and Social Science, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Mathematics and Computing, and Mechatronics.
Out of the total 630 students being conferred the IIT Patna degrees, 515 were male students and 115 were female students. As many as 335 students (276 male and 59 female) were awarded BTech degrees. 73 of the total students (55 male and 18 female) were presented with MSc degrees. As many as 90 (84 male and 6 female) and 132 (100 male and 32 female) students were awarded degrees in MTech and PhD respectively.
Around 366 students received the degree in person while for other degrees, received in absentia, will be sent by post, the institute said.
In addition to the degrees, several medals and prizes were also awarded to outstanding students under categories including the President of India Gold Medal, Director’s Gold Medal, Chairman’s Gold Medal, Aryabhatta Gold Medal and Institute Silver Medals. Shri Kedar Nath Das Memorial Award, Prof. Dibyendu Mukherjee Prize and Institute Proficiency Prizes were also awarded.
The convocation was attended by Dr N Kalaiselvi, Director General, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Secretary Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) as the chief guest and as the Guest of honour RK Pathak, Secretary Technology Development Board, New Delhi. Dr Anand Deshpande, Chairman Board of Governors, IIT Patna and Founder and Chairman of the Persistent Systems, Board Members and Members of Senate of IIT Patna were also present.
The chief guest highlighted the UNESCO’s theme for this year, ‘learning for lasting peace,’ which highlights the need for both internal and external peace. She urged graduates to balance science with humanity, embrace unconventional paths, and view work as a source of fulfilment. The speech encouraged graduates to maximize their potential, embrace opportunities, and continuously learn which is also in line with National Education Policy 2020, an IIT statement said.
During the IIT Patna convocation, the Director discussed in detail the various academic, research, student, infrastructure development, start-ups, technology incubation hub (TIH), outreach, industry-academia, placements, continuing education programme, and alumni-related activities that are taking place in the institute.
