CAT Result 2023 (OUT) Updates: Meet the toppers

In CAT 2023, out of the 14 students who scored 100 percentile, only three belonged to non-engineering background. One of them is 20-year-old Kumar Sai Vishnu from Visakhapatnam. Vishnu recently graduated in BSc Statistics from Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (GITAM), Visakhapatnam.

Unlike many CAT toppers, Vishnu did not enroll in any coaching classes to prepare for the the management entrance exam. Vishnu decided to appear for CAT in July 2022, and started preparing for it immediately after. However, he decided to rely on previous year question papers and mock tests for preparation.

IIMs and other top management institutes select candidates on their CAT percentile score, WAT/GD and PI performance and their academic history, gender diversity, and work experience. Some IIMs have also scrapped the written test round. IIMs also give importance to diversity. 

After the conduct of the CAT on November 26, the Objection Management Exercise was opened from December 5 to 8. The CAT Centre received a total of 85 objections across 3 sections and 3 shifts. A total of 47 objections were received in the Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC) section, out of which one was accepted. Similarly, 28 objections were received in the Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) section, out of which one was accepted. 

Additionally, Quantitative Ability (QA) section received 10 objections, but none of them were accepted.

In total, there are 1 toppers from the state of Maharashtra. 4 candidates scored 100 percentile, 9 achieved 99.99 percentile and 8 candidates got 99.98 percentile.

About 29 candidates scored 99.99 percentile of which one is a women candidate.

Now, every IIM will release a shortlist based on the percentile, along with the cut-off. Then, the GD / PI process will begin, based on which admissions will be finalised.

This time, majority of the toppers are from Maharashtra. There is one topper each from Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala. 4 toppers are from Maharashtra and 2 from Telangana.

This time, engineers have dominated the top ranks. In the group of candidates who scored 100 percentiles, 11 candidates are from engineering background and 3 from non-engineering.

A total of 91 non-IIM institutions will also use CAT 2023 scores this year for admission into their management programmes. 

IIMs will now release their shortlists for subsequent admission processes based on, among other things, the CAT 2023 scores.

This time, around 2.88 lakh candidates appeared for the exam out of around 3.28 lakhs registered eligible candidates. The overall attendance was approximately 88%. Out of the 2.88 lakh candidates, 36% were female candidates, 64% male candidates, and 5 candidates registered from the Transgender category.

There are a total of 14 candidates who scored 100 percentile, 29 who scored 99.99 percentile and 29 other candidates who scored 99.98 percentile. However, among these 72 candidates, there is only one female candidate, and rest are all male candidates. This is for the sixth time that no female candidate has managed to score 100 percentile in the CAT exam.

Last year, in the list of 55 toppers, who scored between 100 to 99.98 percentiles, there were four female candidates. In 2021, there was one female in this category. 

This time, engineers have dominated the top ranks. In the group of candidates who scored 100 percentiles, 11 candidates are from engineering background and 3 from non-engineering.

Similarly, among the 99.99 percentilers, 22 candidate are from engineering background and 7 from non-engineering background. Among the 99.98 percentilers, 20 candidates are from the engineering field and only 9 from non-engineering background.

This time, a total of 14 students have achieved the perfect 100 percentile score. For yet another year, there is no female candidate in the list of candidates who secured 100 percentile.

There is one topper each from Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala. 4 toppers are from Maharashtra and 2 from Telangana.

The IIM admission process may include Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interviews (PI), after the CAT 2023 results are declared.

The CAT 2023 result link hasn't been uploaded at the official website yet, and will soon be uploaded.

Last year, two questions from Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) section from shift 2 and shift 3 were removed from the final evaluation as the questions were assessed to be ‘ambiguous’.

Once released, candidates who appeared for IIM CAT 2023 will be able to check their results at the official website — iimcat.ac.in.

A senior IIM Lucknow confirmed to indianexpress.com that the result for CAT 2023 will be declared around 5 pm. "We are hoping to release the result around 5 pm, the exact time cannot be given right now," the official said.

As of now, IIM Lucknow has not issued an update on the CAT 2023 results. Candidates claim they were able to see the result link earlier in the day, but it was removed quickly.

Once released, candidates who appeared for IIM CAT 2023 will be able to check their results at the official website — iimcat.ac.in.

This time, there were a total of 66 questions, of which 24 were in Section 1: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), 20 in Section 2: Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and 22 questions in Section 3: Quantitative Ability (QA).

While some students claim that they have been able to download their CAT 2023 scorecard, IIM Lucknow has not yet uploaded any result link at the official website. Once updated, candidates who appeared for IIM CAT 2023 will be able to check their results at the official website — iimcat.ac.in.

Last year, out of the candidates who scored 100 percentile, 2 each were from Delhi, Maharashtra and Telangana and one each from Gujarat, Haryana, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh

CAT was conducted in three sessions. In order to ensure fairness and equity in comparison of performances of candidates across different test sessions, the scores of candidates will be subjected to a process of Normalisation.

The Normalisation process will adjust for location and scale differences of score distributions across different forms. After normalisation across different forms, the scores shall be further normalised across different sections. The Scaled Scores obtained by this process will be converted into percentiles for purposes of shortlisting. 

CAT candidates get marks in percentile and not percentage. The Overall Scaled Score is the sum of the scaled scores of the candidate in the three sections. Percentile refers to the percentage of candidates who receive a scaled score less than or equal to the scaled score obtained by the candidate. 

This time, the overall attendance was recorded at approximately 88 per cent, IIM Lucknow said in an official release.

It has been five years since no female candidate has managed to score 100 percentile in the CAT exam. In 2021, a total of 9 candidates secured 100 percentile of which all were male students. In 2020, a total of 9 candidates had scored 100 percentile and all of them were male. In 2019, the female category topper had scored 99.89 percentile. Rounak Majumdar had aced CAT 2018 with 100 percentile with no female in the top spots. In 2017, 20 candidates had scored 100 percentile and the top 20 included female candidates.

Some candidates on 'X' and reports have claimed that the IIM CAT 2023 result has been declared. However, IIM Lucknow is not yet released any update on the official CAT 2023 website. Once an update is issued, the same will be available on this page.

Last year, out of the 11 male candidates who topped the management entrance exam, 10 were non-engineers. Women who scored 99.99 percentile ad 99.98 percentile were all are from engineering academic background.

The window to release CAT 2023 scorecards will look like this (image given below), where candidates will have to log in to check their result.

To download the CAT 2023 scorecard, candidates will have to key in their user ID and password to check their score cards at the official CAT website -- iimcat.ac.in.

After the result is declared, every IIM will release a shortlist based on the percentile, along with the cut-off. Then, the GD / PI process will begin, on the basis of which admissions will be finalised.
