GATE scores can now be used for financial assistance in master’s and doctoral programs across various disciplines, including engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts, and humanities. For doctoral programs, only selected subjects are available, and the institution must be supported by the Ministry of Education or other government agencies.
The following list of IITs will accept GATE 2025 scores:
– Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore
– IIT Bombay
– IIT Delhi

Several public sector undertakings (PSUs), including Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and Grid Controller of India Limited (GRID-INDIA), will use the GATE 2025 results for recruitment.
NPCIL will consider GATE scores from several engineering disciplines, including Civil Engineering (CE), Chemical Engineering (CH), Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC), Electrical Engineering (EE), Instrumentation Engineering (IN), and Mechanical Engineering (ME). Meanwhile, GRID-INDIA will specifically use the Electrical Engineering (EE) paper for their recruitment process.
Additionally, a valid GATE 2025 score can be used for admission to various academic programmes. These include Master’s and direct doctoral programmes in fields such as engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts, or humanities. GATE scores are also accepted for doctoral programmes in relevant branches of these disciplines, at institutions supported by the Ministry of Education and other government agencies.
A significant development in the admission process for MTech students at the Biological Sciences and Bioengineering (BSBE) Department of IIT Kanpur is that, for the first time, the department will be admitting students through the GATE 2025 examination.
Candidates should note that the GATE 2025 scorecards will be released only for those who will clear the cut-off scores for their respective papers.
Clearing GATE does not ensure automatic admission, scholarships, or job placement. Admission to institutes depends on their individual eligibility criteria, and meeting the GATE cutoff alone is not sufficient. Additionally, qualifying GATE does not guarantee recruitment in public sector undertakings (PSUs), as selections are based on separate criteria set by each organization.
GATE 2024 saw a 23% increase in registrations compared to the previous year, with around 6.70 lakh candidates enrolling for 29 subjects. Hailing from Uttar Pradesh, 21-year-old Piyush Kumar improved his Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) rank from 530 in 2023 to AIR 1 this year. His potion to success, he claims, was ensuring that all his concepts are clear.
Kumar is a final year student of BTech CSE from Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya, Haridwar, Uttarakhand. He had been preparing for GATE for the past 15-16 months. When he appeared for GATE 2023, he hadn’t put in as much effort in preparation, so he decided to change his approach towards the exam this year.
“I sat and looked back at what were the mistakes that I was making last year. I identified my weaknesses and worked harder in those areas. When I practised mock tests, I ensured that I did not miss out on those chapters which seemed difficult to me last year,” he told indianexpress.com.

Qualifying in GATE does not guarantee admission, scholarship, or a job. Admission to any institute is fully dependent on the admitting institute’s criteria for educational qualification. GATE qualification does not assure a public sector undertaking (PSU) job.
In 2024, GATE saw an increase of 23 per cent in enrollment, as compared to 2023, about 6.70 lakh candidates registered for GATE for 29 papers, in total. Out of these, 5.17 lakh candidates appeared for the exam in more than 500 centres across the country with an overall attendance of about 77 per cent. The GATE cut-offs will depend on multiple factors. The number of total candidates appearing for GATE, availability of seats at the participating institutions, previous year’s trends and the difficulty level of the exam play an important role in deciding the cut-off.
All participating institutes will seek a COAP registration number on their MTech applications portal for admissions. Candidates who have applied for admission into an MTech. Programme in any of the participating academic institutes, will receive admission offers only via COAP.
To access and take a decision on the most preferred choice out of the offers (if any) made by participating Institute(s), each candidate should register and visit COAP. Without registering at COAP, the candidate cannot access the offers on COAP.
Candidates who have obtained marks less than the qualifying marks mentioned for SC, ST or PwD category of that paper, will be able to download the performance report, at a later date. The date of the release of the GATE 2025 performance reports will be announced on the website - gate2025.iitr.ac.in .
No separate scores and ranks will be provided for candidates attempting either Part B (Section I – Surveying and Mapping) or Part B (Section II – Image Processing and Analysis).

Yes, there will be separate ranks and scores for sectional papers -- XE, XH and XL.
Net total marks for some candidates may be negative. An equation is used for translating marks obtained, into GATE score, which uses various result-related parameters, a statement on the IIT Roorkee official website -- gate2025.iitr.ac.in said. It is possible that some candidates may be awarded a negative GATE score, even if their marks are positive.
The GATE 2025 scorecards will be released only for those who will clear the cut-off score.

In GATE 2025 examination, some test papers were conducted in multi-sessions. For such test papers, a suitable normalisation was applied to take into account any variation in the difficulty levels of the question papers across sessions. As per a statement on the GATE 2025 information brochure, the normalisation is done based on the fundamental assumption that “in all multi-session GATE test papers, the distribution of abilities of candidates is the same across all the sessions”.
This assumption, it added, is justified since the number of candidates appearing in multisession test papers in GATE 2025 will be large and the procedure for allocation of session to candidates is random. Further, it is also ensured that for the same multi-session test paper, the number of candidates allotted in each session is of the same order of magnitude.
After the evaluation of the answers, the actual (raw) marks obtained by a candidate will be considered for computing the GATE score. For multi-session test papers, raw marks obtained by the candidates in different sessions will be converted to Normalized marks for that particular subject. Thus, raw marks (for single session test papers) or normalised marks for multi-session test papers will be used for computing the GATE Score, based on the qualifying marks.
The GATE 2025 scorecards will be available for free download between March 28 and May 31. From June 1 to December 31, candidates will be able to avail the GATE 2025 score cards by paying a fee of Rs 500 per test paper.
