Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, will commence admission for its undergraduate programmes from May 21 this year. Currently, the university offers more than 700 programmes like BA LLB, BA Hons in Arts, Dance, Indian Languages, Economics, Sociology, BSc in Zoology, Geography, and Physics to name some. According to a notification, admissions to 33 courses will be conducted through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) which is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA)
BHU has five institutes which include science and medical science, and 16 faculties including the faculty of Arts, Law, Education, Commerce and more. BHU also has 135 departments.
In 2022, centrally run Banaras Hindu University received 4.34 lakh applications through CUET, making it the second university to receive such a high number of applications. This year, BHU plans to conduct entrance exams for 33 courses through CUET this year.
The university offers a number of programmes and the duration of the programmes depends on it. The undergraduate programmes are three years while the postgraduate programmes are two years and a diploma can be one or two years depending on the diploma programme.
Students from various groups, such as SC, ST, persons with disabilities, OBC, single girls, economically disadvantaged sections, meritorious students, etc., are given a variety of university, state, and federal government scholarships. In addition, the institution has agreements in place with a number of non-governmental organisations to provide financial aid to students from a variety of streams.
The university has introduced a scholarship programme for BPL students. The qualifying student’s bank account will get a transfer of Rs 25,000 per year as part of the programme. A second scholarship offered by the university will pay Divyang students Rs 25,000 every year.
BHU has around 76 hostels which are separate for boys, girls and International students. For boys, there are around 41 hostels, for girls 21 and for international students four. The hostels are divided according to the Institutes or faculties.
BHU Rankings:
According to the National Institute of Ranking Framework 2022, BHU ranked eleventh in the overall category and sixth in the university category. In the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranking, BHU grabbed a position between 401-450 and in Times Higher Ranking (BHU) stood at 601-800 band.
BHU was founded by Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, in 1916 with cooperation of Dr Annie Besant, Banaras Hindu University was created under the Parliamentary legislation – BHU Act 1915.
