EVEN AS the overall pass percentage of students in Panchkula in Haryana board’s Class XII results remained dismal, girl students from government schools in Panchkula managed to shine, as they emerged toppers in all the streams in results declared by the Board of School Education, Haryana (BSEH).

Priyanka, a student of science (medical) at Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Barwala, was brimming with joy, as she emerged topper of Class XII in Panchkula district with 94.4 per cent. With 97 in English, 95 in Physics, 94 in Biology, 95 in Hindi and 91 in Chemistry, she aspires to pursue MBBS and has already started preparing for pre-medical entrance examinations.

“I have been studying in a government school since Class I, but my parents had enrolled me for English medium, which has become my strength ever since. Students who have to shift from Hindi medium to English medium have to face a tough time,” said Priyanka, the eldest among her three siblings.

Her father Mohinder Pal is an accountant in a private organisation while mother Manju is a housewife.

In commerce stream, Kajal from Government Senior Secondary School, Mandana, Morni Block, came topper with 92.2 per cent while in humanities, Pooja from Sarthak Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 12-A, Panchkula, led the way with 89.6 per cent.

“I had studied on my own, but it would not have been possible without teachers’ support. I had studied in Hindi medium till Class X, so faced difficulty in drafting answers in English in Classes XI and XII,” said Kajal who secured 87 marks in English.

Hailing from a village in Janau in Morni Block, Kajal maintains students should focus on what is being taught in school, as there are no tuition/coaching classes available in the area. Highlighting that many girls had dropped out of school after Class X due to family pressure, she wants all parents to allow their daughters to complete higher education.

Her father Bhaag Chand works as a driver in Parwanoo while mother Mamta Devi is a housewife. “As students, we can study hard, but results depend on how we are being taught in schools. There are several government schools with inadequate teachers, due to which performance suffers,” she said.

Kajal now plans to enrol for BCom in a Chandigarh-based college.
